| My chart shows average daytime temperatures of 30 degrees Fahrenheit
for March and 39 degrees for April. That compared to 31 degrees and 47
degrees for Chicago for the same time frame. So you better pack that
winter coat and be prepared to encounter a snow drift or two.
Here's a quote from the little book, "Round the Swedish Year" by
Downman, Austin, and Baird:
This is a dangerous time of year, indeed, with sudden snowstorms
and glacial winds followed by unexpected thaws. It's a case
of keeping one's eyes open for the yellow and red signs, warning
of falling snow or, better, keeping ones eye cocked upwards.
Danger can be hanging in wait along many eves. And worst of
all, this is just a vague hint of spring. The last snow has
been known to come in May!

Here's some more information for you that's more current - this
winter, the lowest temperature so far has been -10 Celsius (or 50
Fahrenheit) so it hasn't been too bad. And that was only for two
or three days. Current weather is mild: 3-4 degrees Celsius, no
snow, only rain. It's been like this since mid-December, and if
that is any indication of what is to come, March/April will
probably be quite OK. You can expect mild weather - if we're
unlucky there may be lots of slush from the melted snow, but it may
also be dry and very nice with sunshine etc.
Late March/early April is what I would call "early spring".

| Spring comes to Sweden on Valborgsm�ssafton (Walpurgis Night) on the last
evening of April. Everybody wanders up to the nearest hill with some
junk to throw on a bonfire. Then we all sit around, shivering in the
chill, drinking our coffee (perhaps with a little extra flavor added)
and look out at the bonfires on all of the other hills in the distance.
The next morning, is the labor holiday, and the following weekend is
when the boats go in the water.
Of course, it usually snows a bit around that time, but no one cares.

Well, I've got my tickets! Going to Stockholm April 18, leaving
on April 25. Hope the mild weather holds while I'm there, because
I want to see EVERYTHING!

My husband & I have recently returned from our one week in Stockholm.
It was wonderful! We stayed with a friend (a Swede) right in the
city and tried to see & do everything.
We were amazed and flattered that everyone spoke such good English.
After a week of seeing Gamla Stan, Wasa, Skansen (& the baby bears!),
Vaxholm, Uppsala, Waldermarsude(sp?), the television tower, the
Stadhuset, Parliament, and the Palace, we didn't want to leave!
Our nights were spent at the Opera (a new experience for us), the
Daily News Cafe, the Cafe Opera, and friends' homes for dinner.
The only drawbacks were the weather(we had snow several days and
we weren't prepared for the cold) and the expense- I'd been told
Scandinavia was expensive and I should've believed!
But, it was a holiday we will never forget, and we are already
looking forward to the next time we can go!
