| There will be a Scandinavian fair on Saturday, November 21st from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School off
Hayward Road in Acton, Mass.
There'll be tables of things for sale such as Scandinavian hand
crafts and gourmet foods as well as servings of Norwegian waffles,
smorebrod, krumkake and desserts in the cafe.
At noon a group of Finnish folk dancers will perform followed by
other Scandinavian dance demos.

Boston Ballet's March program "The Scandinavians" will be presented
9 through 13 March at the Wang Center, Boston, MA.
'Etudes', choreographed by Harald Lander in 1948 for the Royal Danish
Ballet is a ballet about ballet. The piece represents the daily practice
to which dancers dedicate their lives and souls. The score, 'Etudes', is
by Austrian composer Carl Czerny, who wrote many pieces for technical
practice familiar to most piano students. 'Etudes' is itself a piece
exemplifying the rigorous daily ritual of maintaining and improving
ones art, so it is particularly suited to the choroegrapher's intent.
Harald Lander learned to dance in the Royal Danish Ballet under the
direction of Hans Beck. Lander served as director of the Royal Danish
Ballet from 1932 until 1951, and as director of Dance and resident
choreographer at the Paris Op�ra from 1951 until 1962.
'Miss Julie' is based on the play of the same name by Swedish playwright
August Strindberg. Choreographed in 1950 by Birgit Cullberg, the ballet
is classical choreography imbued with powerful emotional themes. Denied
a dance education as a child, Birgit Cullberg decided to become a chore-
ographer while in college. She also choreographs ballet productions for
television which she considers important because television allows a
larger audience to see ballets. The music was composed by Stockholm-born
composer Ture Rangstr�m.
'Napoli' by Danish choreographer August Bournonville, is regarded as
the choreograher's best work. Based on experiences he had in Naples in
1841, the ballet is exuberant and festive. The music was composed by
a collaboration between four composers, including Danish-born Edvard
Helsted and Holger Simon Paulli. August Bournonville was the son of
a French dancer who stopped in Copenhagen on his way back to Paris
but fell in love with a Danish ballerina and decided to stay. August
studied ballet in Paris before returning to Copenhagen where he was
appointed as balletmaster of the Royal Danish Ballet by the King of
Denmark. Bournonville's style of choreography is very popular because
it does not overly favor either male or female dancer. This and other
attributes have marked his style as unique from all others.

In association with the Boston Ballet production of 'Miss Julie' the
American Repertory Thetre will stage a reading of Strindberg's play
at the theatre at 64 Brattle St, Cambridge, MA. February 22 at 8pm.

of August Strindberg concurrently with the run of "The Scandinavians".

The Boston Chapter of Finlandia Foundation is presenting a single
showing of the Finnish language color film "The Snow Queen" with
English subtitles.

"Lumikuningatar" (Snodrottningen) is a visually resplendent fantasy
film based on H. C. Andersen, combining a classic fairy tale with

the equivalent in Swedish history of George Washington for the USA.
Vasa was crowned king on June 6, 1523. He was born in 1496 (perhaps
his birthday or name day?)

| To a Swede, Vasa may refer to several things:
* A crisp-bread brand (unlikely in the context of Vasa day)
* The dynasty started by Gustavus Vasa, normally denoted by the
phrase "the Vasa Dynasty". Gustavus Vasa is *never* referred to as
"Vasa". (In fact, in Sweden {or at least in the part where I grew
up}, it is considered slightly rude to refer to somebody by last name
only; the only people who are addressed in that manner are
(conscripted) soldiers and social inferiors {"Would Johansson please
open the door for me"}.)
* A 17th-century warship that was excavated some 20 years ago (this
is normally referred to as "Wasa", but Swedish makes no distinction
between "W" and "V" (this is why the Swedish alphabet "only" has 28
letters, although it has the three extra letters "a with a ring
over it", "a with umlaut", and "o with umlaut").
* A town in Finland, nowadays normally referred to by its Finnish
name (which escapes me at the moment).
As for which of the above "Vasa day" refers to, your guess is as good
as mine.

Subject: Swedish dance/music weekend
Scandia DC (Washington) is running a weekend of dance and music from
Sweden at Buffalo Gap Camp, Capon Bridge, WV (near Winchester VA, 2 hrs
from Washington, DC). Featured are Goeran and Inger Karlholm, dance
researchers and dance teachers from northern Sweden, and fiddler Gunnar
Jonsson. The Karlholms have previously been well received on the U.S.
west coast. The weekend includes opportunities for both dance classes
and fiddle classes.

weekend.
And, to think about for the future, we in Boston will have a weekend of
workshops with Tommy and Ewa Englund and _Bengt_ Jonsson in February.
These folks have taught extensively in the U.S. and have been well

This past Saturday our Scandinavian Festival took place at the
Topsfield fairgrounds here in Massachusetts. The highlights included
two performances by the Birka Scandinavian dancers. They did the
Weavers' Dance, the Norwegian Chimney Sweep Dance, and the Swedish
Windmill Dance, along with a Finnish dance and another new one they
just learned. The food was quite good too.
The dancers' next performance will be at the November 27 Lucia festival
in nearby Hamilton, Mass.

There will be a Scandinavian fair this Saturday, November 20th from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School off
Hayward Road in Acton, Mass.
There'll be tables of things for sale such as Scandinavian hand
crafts and gourmet foods as well as servings of Norwegian waffles,
smorebrod, krumkake and desserts in the cafe.
Sponsored by Norumbega Lodge 506 of the Sons of Norway.

a Scandinavian theme for the first time. We saw the opening show last
Friday and it was one of the best Revels we've seen and we've been
going for more than 20 years.

| April is Danish month at the Scandinavian Library, 206 Waltham Street,
Newton, Mass. On 4 April the movie _Nattevagten_ will be shown after a
musical performance by Mads Granum and Camille Idali at 7:30 pm.
On 5 April the movie _Kun_en_pige_ will be shown at 11 am.
On 16 April, an evening of sm�rrebr�d and beer, with a sing-along of
mostly Danish songs.
