| | My wife has a great fondness for mousse de foie gras from D'Artagnan
(1-800-DARTAGN) and good sauternes. As I don't earn Bob Palmer's
salary, I can tell you I don't get it too often.

How about fruit that you can feed one another... strawberries (you could
dip in chocolate) or grapes. Or perhaps a fruit fondue. I know there is
a recipe for fondue sauces for fruit in this conference somewhere.
I love brie cheese but that is best baked and served warm.
Shrimp cocktail... peel them prior to the picnic so that all you need
to do is dig in.

Don't tell me: she prefers D'Yquem but Rieussec will do in a pinch. ;-)
D'Artagnan mousses and terrines are supposed to be of superior quality, but at
those prices, they oughtta be! :-)

Providing for "off-site" probably rules out cheese fondue. Shrimp
Cocktail would be easy to store and elegant, although a bit too
    commercial.

You probably want to stay away from anything that will be lead in your
stomach. Also, remember to keep those onions and garlic home! :)

If your in Mass, the heat wave will make things unusually difficult to
    store for freshness.

Have you thought about purchasing a picnic basket? There is several
stores/deli's that have different themes, mentioned elsewhere in this
    file.

A good loaf of french bread, a couple of select cheeses, fruits and a
bottle of wine would sound good to me.

Au contraire! As long as both are partaking of it, there's no problem.

| | For me there is nothing better than a few slices of "jamon serrano" and
a good bottle of sherry! in the U.S. the closest thing to "jamon" is
prosciutto ham and goes extremely well with french bread and "San
    Patricio" sherry.

Another good hit is thinly sliced salmon, served with minced onions and
capers over toast... and with sherry! if unavailble I would consider a
good white wine but only if sherry could not be found. (salmon would
need some preparation but not the ham.

    cheers, Ana

Had she done so, she would have found the following topics, a few of
which I'm sure must have recipes for what she'd consider "romantic"

| 3946.9 | picnic! | COMET::KENT | Onward, Through the Fog! | Wed Jun 15 1994 19:52 | 9 |
| | I agree with the "feed each other" idea. What did it for me was always:
Summer Sausage (presliced), a "smoky" cheese (my favorite was Gouda), a
normal cheese (cheddar or similar), sliced and cored apples,
grapes/strawberries/whatever nibble fruit was in season, a small can of
mixed nuts, port wine cheese and Ritz crackers, smoked oysters, and a
bottle or two of your favorite Rose, well chilled. Sit/lay/cuddle there
and feed each other 'til Nature takes its course! Enjoy!

amount of cream cheese on it and wrap around scallions...they are
    great.....

don't think scallion breath would be all that romantic...

If both have scallion breath, neither will notice. :-)
