I have made toddler birthday cakes as a train. Use the small bread
pans, bake your favorite cake in them, then decorate them with animal
crackers for a circus train with cookies for wheels and licorice
for bars and just use your imagination. Another idea is a
merry-go-round, use peppermint sticks for supports and cookie animals
    and horses.

| | The train idea is very good, and not terribly difficult. You can also
cut up a sheet cake to make the train cars, if you don't have mini loaf
    pans.

I got a wonderful cake decorating book about a week ago. It contains a
recipe for a glaze that makes frosting a cut cake easier. I'll try to
remember to bring it in tomorrow. I'll also give some other ideas from
    the book.

| | I made a 'bear' for my daughters birthday. Use 2 round cake pans and
then a couple of cupcakes for the arms/legs. M&M for the facial pieces
    and coconut for the 'fur'.

I also made a snowman - same idea 2 round cake pans, all white
frosting, long thin red licorice (sp?) wrapped between the two cakes to
act as a scarf, 1/2 cupcake in black/brown frosting for a hat, gumdrops
for the buttons, the other half of the cupcake was used for the broom
    on the side.

    Enjoy, have fun.

| 2226.4 | Here's the glaze recipe | IDEALS::FARINA |  | Mon Feb 05 1990 16:14 | 19 |
| | Here's the glaze, taken from _Party_Cakes_ by Virginia Welsh and Alison
    French:

Sieve 2 tablespoons of apricot jam into a saucepan. Add 1 tablespoon
of water and bring to a boil. For a sponge or chocolate cake, allow to
cool and brush onto the cake with a pastry brush. Apply the glaze hot
    to a rich fruit cake.

The notes by the authors say that this seals the crumbs so they don't
mix with the frosting. They advise using it on a freshly baked cake or
    if you're not feeling confident.

I said I'd add some ideas from the book, but they're kind of
complicated, and the ideas in these replies seem pretty good to me! I
especially like the snowman idea - easy! And don't forget to use
animal crackers if you go with the train - then it could be the Little
    Train that Could!
