Anyone have a recipe for ORNAMENTAL bread and/or rolls that
can be varnished and used as decorations? I've looked through
Christmas books, and found some ornamental cookie recipes for
tree hangings, etc., but would prefer a raised bread or roll.

I saw a programme on television here not too long ago about this...
these people they were interviewing have built up a very good business
doing this.
Basically they bake regular yeast raised bread and they dry it very
slowly in a very low oven. After drying they bored holes up through
the bottom and 'filled' the bread with glaze. After this was dry
they glazed the bread for showing. They also used water coloured
paints to enhance the colour when needed prior to glazing.
I think they were using an acrylic glaze of some sort. They said
it was very important the bread dried out completely or it would
mould under the glaze. I can imagine a gas oven with a pilot light
would work over a period of time.

There is a bread my kids & I used to make and they would even paint it
with tempra paints. It was made with flour and salt and water. We
baked it very slowly and let it cool thoroughly before we removed from
foil lined cookie sheet. I'll try to find the recipe. They made
frogs, mushrooms, butterflies, worms, flowers and leaves. We gathered
twigs and dried moss. I cut wood into 6" squares and we stained or
painted it, glued the twigs etc on making pictures and they sold them
at Christmas. We attached the plaques to a piece of peg board and they
went door to door in our neighborhood. Out of 15 they sold 13. Not
bad for kids.
Also, we attached picture hanging rings at the top. I kept one they
made and don't know what happened to the other one we had left.
