| | Nat,
Shame the soccer is not on TV...here in Germany they have a special
channel 3-Sat to show ALL team sports in the olympics...and the soccer
is so refreshing after watching the Euro-96 and WC94 ...uninhibited
players just going out and having a lot of fun...In the mens tourny
they are looking towards a 'Dream final' between Argentina and
    Brazil...

PS... Anybody who didn't see the goals from the ladies China v Brazil
game should strive to see them..one Chinese goal was as good as
Klinsmann's goal against Russia in the Euro-96.

    Cheers,

    Dezzz.

| | Argentina kept up their part of the bargain with a 2-0 win over
Portugal. Last night N-B-$ee showed "highlights" from the 6 PM
semi-final match at just past midnight. The "highlights"
consisted of one great defensive play by Portugal and the two
Argentine goals.
Tonight's Brazil-Nigeria game is a rematch from group play which
Brazil won 2-0. Looks like the dream match will become reality
(unless Nigeria gets some players from Japan).

	Final result of Brazil-Nigeria :
	Nigeria 4-3 Brazil
Brazil leaded 3-1 in first half, but Nigeria got goals at 80min and
90min. I cannot watch overtime play because I must come to office;-),
but I heard from coleague that Nigeria won.
We cannot watch 'Dream Final' between Brazil and Argentina, but
Nigeria is superb team(especially in offence), so I think it
	is fun to watch final.

| | Well I saw the first half (Telecential cut the signal and I was
unaware of it being on BBC2) and it was a brilliant game with both sides
playing excellent football. I bet Brazil are gutted after losing after
    having a 3-1 lead!

| | From a spectator's point of view, this "golden goal"
stuff is rather fun. After all of the noise during
Euro96 regarding the negative play during the OT,
we have seen GG in the Euro96 final and one each in
the men's and women's Olympic semifinals.
During the MLS game in Foxboro last night, they announced
the half-time Olympic score of 3-1, Brazil. I wish they
had announced the final score. Three Nigerians were on
the pitch - Francis Okaroh for the Rev and Mike Emanelo
and Ben Iroha for the Lobsters (aka San Jose Clash).
Sorry, Marcelo.
After watching Nigeria lose to Italy in WC94 at Foxboro
by giving up two goals late in the game, it seems that
the Nigerians have finally figured out that soccer is a
game of (at least) 90 minutes. A great day for African
football. Will they have anything left for Sunday's match?
Oh, yeah. The Rev won 2-0 with both goals from our new
addition, Joe-Max Moore, late of Germany's second division.
Tonight: USA vs. China for the first ever Women's Football Gold.
Also, Norway vs. Brazil for the Bronze.
Saturday evening: Brazil vs. Portugal for the Men's Bronze.
Sunday afternoon: Argentina vs. Nigeria for the Men's Gold.

I think that NBC will show some of the game but most likely will make
use of video highlites, most likely around 11:51pm. Same for the men's
game...with the US out and Brazil out there's no way in hell they'd
    televise it...such a shame.

However, here in the US I'm sure we can look forward to more of
Endberg's Moments :-))) and rumor has it that instead of the closing
ceremonies NBC is going to show The Best of Endberg's Moments.......

    NBC su*ks.

| | Careful now, Jerry. You have to learn the code words so
that you do not run afoul of the corporate noting
guidelines that are so faithfully observed here in the
footie file. <VBG>
Allegedly, N-B-$ee will be featuring the Women's final
on TV tonight. See the Youth_Soccer Notes file for my
take on N-B-$ee's recipe for the broadcast. Similarly,
they are alleged to feature the final on Sunday afternoon.
Although I do not expect much, I will hanging on every
word, with my VCR running and my butt firmly planted on
the couch - sampling the IPA and ESB that I am bottling
this afternoon. Hopefully toasting many US goals and not
drowning my sorrows (as certain Southern Hemisphere noters
were likely doing last night).

| | Well I saw the highlights of the womens game this morning on TV and it
was an excellent match. I was impressed with the standard of the
footy... the Americans first goal was excellent.. it was a good save by
the Chinese keeper... it was an excellent strike by the USA player.

Just in case you don't know the result.. it was :

    	USA 2 - 1 China

    Cheers,

Friday evening: Brazil vs. Portugal for the Men's Bronze.
Saturday afternoon: Argentina vs. Nigeria for the Men's Gold.
-------------------------
Can't report much on the USA-China match, except that the ESB
was very tasty and packed one hell of a punch.
N-B-$ee showed both US goals and the last 90 seconds of the
match (with Cindy Parlow waiting to come on as a sub and being
ignored by the referee. How many chances in a lifetime does a
kid get to play in the Olympic final match?). They did a mass
team interview and showed the Gold medal ceremony. You did not
know Norway got the Bronze (2-0 over Brazil) unless you noticed
their flag on the pole.

| | I agree, Ray, it was an excellent game. I also agree that the pen they
won was dodgy but a little while later West felled someone in the box
and got away with it so it all balanced out.

Why do Nigeria make it so hard for themselves though?

Three Nigerian is clearly at offside position, but I think
goaler(Amunike?) is onside. I think that ref judged Nigerian players
except goaler did not affect the goal.
	Anyway, Nigeria showed great performance.
But I feel they showed lesser performance when they are leading;-)
