I think either the USA or Brazil will win the world cup. Thanks
for the tip about Ronaldo. What club team does he play for?

Hi Simon, Ronaldo plays in Cruzeiro, a club team from Belo Horizonte,
and was the big revelation from last year.
I live in So Paulo and my club team is Corinthians(the most loved).
If you want more informations from brazilian soccer, notice me.

    Edu,

I am French, but very interested by the Brazilian football.
One point: we have some well known Brazilian players in the French
    league: Valdo, Ricardo, Rai, Anderson.

About these players, definitively, and after having watched them a full
season, the two ones to take in the selection are:
    - Anderson: an outstanding striker
    - Valdo: Brilliant defender/midfield.
And they seem not to be selected. Ricardo and Rai are selected:
    - Ricardo: good player, but no comparison with Valdo
    - Rai: the BIG deception. He did not ptoved anything, and Paris SG is
acting now to get rid of him.

Do you know any reason for such a behaviour by the Brazilian coach ?

    Pierre-Yves

By pronouncing yourself an expert on the Brazilian national side, you
started something big here. It would be great if you could post a brief
description of the players in the side (besides which I think your
    English is great).

Thanks Simon by incentice. The title brazilian team are:

     Goalkeeper: Taffarel (plays in Italy)

Right-full back: Jorginho (plays for Bayer in Germany)
Centre-back: Ricardo Gomes (plays for PSG in France)
Centre-back: Ricardo Rocha (plays for Vasco da Gama in Brazil)
Left-full back: Branco (plays for Fluminense in Brazil)

Right-midfield: Ra (plays for PSG in France)
Centre-midfield: Dunga (plays for Stutgart in Germany)
Centre-midfield: Mauro Silva (plays for La Corua in Spain)
Left-midfield: Zinho (plays for Palmeiras in Brazil)

Striker: Bebeto (plays for La Corua in Spain)
Striker: Romario (plays for Barcelona in Spain)

     The reserves are as follows:

     Goalkeepers: Zetti - So Paulo(Brazil)
                    Gilmar - Flamengo(Brazil)

     Defenders: Cafu - So Paulo
                   Leonardo - So Paulo
                   Aldair - Roma(Italy)
                   Marcio Santos - I don't remember

Midfields: Paulo Srgio - (plays in Germany)
                   Mazinho - Palmeiras(Brazil)

     Strikers: Viola - CORINTHIANS(Brazil)
                   Ronaldo - Cruzeiro(Brazil)
                   Muller - So Paulo

     Coach : Carlos Alberto Parreira

Parreira has been criticed by setting Branco(much aged player for that
position)and to build a much defensive squad. In my opinion Brazil team
must always plays in atack, like that team from 1982 with Zico,Scrates,
    Eder,Falco,Cerezo,Junior,ect(rememberd by Martin-Ireland).
Ra is a doubt for Cup,for me he is in bad phase by long time.
Since So Paulo times he was playing very bad.Parreira credit many in
    him.I don't know your future.

    Pierre-Yves,

I have to disagree with you somewhat on your judgment of Brazilian
    players in France:

>> About these players, definitively, and after having watched them a full
>> season, the two ones to take in the selection are:
>> - Anderson: an outstanding striker

I agree 100%. However, when compared to Bebeto and Romario, I
don't think he's above them. But yes, I would definitely include him in
    the 22 players.

>> - Valdo: Brilliant defender/midfield.

Defender? Are you joking? He is a brilliant playmaker, but he is
SLOW... Remember the last World Cup, he was terrible.

>> And they seem not to be selected. Ricardo and Rai are selected:
>> - Ricardo: good player, but no comparison with Valdo

I strongly disagree. Ricardo is not spectacular but he never makes
mistakes, never ever. He missed 3 games with Paris and those were the
    games Paris lost...

>> - Rai: the BIG deception. He did not prove anything, and Paris SG is
>> acting now to get rid of him.

I agree his season with Paris was p**s-poor. But he did not stop
playing for 3 years in a row, had to adapt to a new environment and
style of play. Remember he is the Brazil captain. I would like to see
him play with Brazil before writing him off. I suspect that his
performance will be much better with Brazil.

    My 2 cruzeiros.

| |
    JF,

You have a point about Valdo saying he is a play maker, but you know
that Artur Jorge with his defensive conceptions positioned his merely
as a 'defensive' midfield, i.e. starting and attacking from a more back
position... but this is pure tactical stuff

However, I don't agree at all when you say he is slow. In all the PSG
matches I could watch, he was (along with Ginola) the most 'percutant'
player. Of course, if you only play the counter attack and need
    runners...

Anderson: he did not need to adapt, and scored practically at each
match. Compare with Rai (not with Bebeto and Romario, not discutable),
    who was ..ramping.

Nevertheless, if Parreira does not make a too defensive team, I think
that we will see a very competitive team.

    PYV

P.S. Congratulations, JF, for Rennes and sorry to have taken you the
         title at the last match.
(sorry for the other readers, this PS is pure French 2nd Div stuff).

| 385.9 | Brasil are nice to watch ..what's next? | GYMAC::DCASSIDY |  | Mon Jun 06 1994 09:16 | 24 |
| | Well having seen them against Canada last night....they have no problem
in making oppurtunities but...putting them away ???. Romario and Bebeto
must have had between 15-20 'good' chances to score..Romario's goal was
a beaut though...(1-1 Final score). The players that impressed me were
Leanardo and Jorghino...they are fast. Enjoyed the football even if the
    goals were not abundant.

Having seen the BIG (Brazil,Italy and Germany) three over the
weekend, it is inconceivable that the winner will come from anywhere
else. All three looked as if they were getting into the groove though I
will say that they all made some very stupid mistakes in defence. The
established player who must come under scrutiny is Baresi of Italy.

Italy 1 Switzerland 0 .....(Goal a mile offside).
Germany 5 Austria 1........(Moeller and Effenberg were given the
space which Keane didn't give them. Big
difference was Andy Brehme, still a
    				brilliant player).
    	Ireland 1 Czech Republic 3
( Down to earth with a bang...according to
Jack he made too many mistakes).

Are you sure about the Italy - Switzerland scoreline ? As far as I was
aware it finished at 1-1 and not 1-0.

Consensus had it that Jack had reverted to a 4-4-2 formation in an
attempt to add to the carnival atmosphere with a few goals. That was
the net result, unfortunately, the Czechs got the majority of the
tally. With a bit of luck, Jack has learned from yesterday, and can
avoid the same mistakes in the States.

| | Austria - Germany 1:5 (0:1)
Don't use this game for Your prophecies - this was the most friendly
friendship-game. Our Austrians have been a sleeping team in the second half,
there has been no attack , no bad foul from any Austrian or German player.
The Austrian Polster (3rd of the german scorer list) after the game:
With this performance we will defeat no team of the world. - and this is true.
But I think , Germany is a typical tournament team , and so they will become
stronger.

Now that the Brazil topic has been rediscovered, has anyone followed
the Brazilean Club Football that Eurosport has covered lately?

Brilliant skills as expected, but the big surprise for me is the
sometimes *extremely* physical and brutal tackling. The players seem to
get away with tackles that we simply don't see in Europe.

BTW can anyone explain the League organization of Brazil? I'm led to
beleive that the Championship is decided by some kind of play-off
structure for which you qualify through regional leagues. True or
    false?

Do we still have Brazilean readers/contributors?

I do believe the Championship is decided by a play-off. In fact, ESPN
Pay-Per View here in the US is offering the semi-final and final
matches of the Brazilian Championships (I think it is sometime in early
    December).

I would like to know if any of our Brazilian contributors could list the
    remaining teams in the tournament.

    Thanks in advance,
