| | Yes, I tend to agree with Gary's remarks, Rangers will go no further
than the 2nd round, if that, they will certainly not reach the
mini league stages, they are not good enough for even average
European teams, although I've no doubt Walter Smith would like to
change that situation, he has a good midfield and front-line,
however, the defence will leak goals, especially via Brown and
McPherson......they also appear to never be able to score away from
home and avoid conceding at home......most of the teams they play
rarely need to do anything other than win on the away goals rule.

The same applies to Celtic, good midfield, reasonable front-line and
hash defence, they will also concede goals, if Cologne were not
playing badly at the moment they would knock Celtic out easily, however,
they'll only get as far as the 2nd round anyway.

The rest are no-hopers......they are garbage in all departments,
apart from the odd flash-in-the-pan league results.

I see no reason for optimism, especially when you consider Scots teams
past record in European competitions.......it will be another case
of laughing stocks of Europe in a few weeke time, the sooner we face
reality the more likelihood there is for REAL changes in the Scottish
    game to take place.

I see no reason why Rangers should not progress into the next round.
Celtic have a chance if they can stop committing defensive suicide,
only on the strength that Cologne are playing badly. Im prepared to
accept that Hibs and Airdrie will go out in a blaze of no-glory, and
Hearts ??? well its up to them. All I can hope for is that they all
play to their best abilities and try to do us proud. Come on ALL you

    3 out, 2 to go

Anderlecht will slice Hibs apart in Belgium, despite Miller's crazy
    comments.

Airdrie will also be sliced apart in Prague.

Celtic will lose the goal at home that leads to their exit, they'll
probably win on the night though.

The other two will commit hari-kari as well, Hearts tie will be beyond
them after tonight and Rangers will lose at least one goal at home,
as USUAL, and make the tie that bit easier for what would appear to be
    a very average team.

Just a wee piece of Euro info.

Lyngby's big Nigerian defender has walked out of the club due to a pay
dispute. He now wants to play in England or France. Also there is only
a crowd of 8-10 thousand expected at the game (including 2000 Gers) due
to Lyngby's poor start to the season.

       Final predictions for this week:

Rangers - May get through but will need to score an away goal.

Hearts _ I reckon they'll win on the night 2-1 and go out on away
    goals

Celtic - 3-1 victory and out. They have the ability to score but
    not the ability to defend.

Hibs - Very little chance, probably losing 1 or 2 nil on the
    night.

        Airdrie - Wasted trip!

So after the midweek games we should have 1 team left in or if we
    carry a lot of luck maybe 2. Wow. 8-}

| 260.20 | ROUND 2 | MASALA::JOWENS |  | Wed Oct 21 1992 16:28 | 27 |
| | Well, seeing as how this note has been neglected of late here we go
    again.

Last night Celtic turned in (according to radio & papers) a very
creditable performance. They now should have an excellent chance of
making round 3. I hope that they do as it can only be good for Scottish
football. Their biggest worry is surely the dreaded away goal.

Rangers versus Leeds. You just have to observe some of the notes in
the conference to see the interest this one has generated. I,
personally fancy Rangers to go through 3-1 on aggregate (2-0 & 1-1). It
is not an easy tie to pick a winner from at all. Whoever shows the most
`bottle' will walk away with the QF place.

Hearts versus Liege. This is a bit tricky with Liege mouthing off
about how bad Hearts are. This may just inspire Hearts to greater
things. They are slightly disadvantaged being at home for the first leg
and can't rely on an inspired second leg comeback. Joe Jordan thinks
that Liege are technically no better than Slavia Prague.

     Good Luck to them all,

         Jonno.

PS If we have 2 clubs in after this round we're doing OK.

perform to their best abilities in 2 weeks time.

1-1 draw at Elland Rd, but the absence of Gough and Steven would mean
the loss of key men in critical areas, and that could swing it Leeds'
way.....heres hoping for a quick recovery for them..Gough has a groin
strain and Steven a torn calf muscle.

Well, we could have had all 3 teams through if:

      1) Hearts had any luck.
      2) Swedish referees had more bottle.
      3) Celtic had played for longer than 40 minutes.

After watching the Hearts and Celtic games on TV they just weren't
meant to win. The refereeing on Tuesday night was inconsistent in the
extreme. How the German right back stayed on the park I'll never know.
Today in the press the Germans manager said that Celtic forgot that the
ball was on the park. Did he watch the same game?? Hearts last night
played very well for the first 45 and could of equalised through Tosh
Mckinlay but once Liege got the goal the match was finished as a
    contest.

Unlucky but at least there's is hope for the future of both teams as
they both seemed to play nice football in patches.

On a happier note Rangers stuffed it up the oh-so-cocky English with 2
very good perfomances. Goram was immense last night, as was the rest of
the back 4. Cantona will be sick of the sight of a *Scottish* keeper
    after that game.

For Rangers to do well(ie reach the final) they could do with a couple
of breaks in Fridays draw in Zurich. I would like to see them missing
AC Milan & PSV. If they do that I think that with a bit of luck they
can go to the final in May.

The remaining clubs are : Rangers
                                AC Milan
                              PSV Eindhoven
                               FC Brugges
                               CSKA Moscow
                               Marseilles
                               FC Porto
                               Gothenberg.

          Jonno

PS Rangers are second favourites according to the bookies at 5-1 with
    AC Milan favourites at 4-5.

Don't know what British TV station have the rights. An Italian
Company (I think) have the rights to all the round robin games. ITV
will have to talk to them.

    re.-1
AC Milan were beaten by Marseilles 2 seasons ago. This also
resulted in a 1 year ban from Europe. I would say now they are better
side, unbeaten for 41 matches in Serie A. They have bought more players
of late, Lentini, Papin and of course Gullit is fit again. We are
getting Italian soccer live in the UK and they look formidable. The
"Dream Team" of European football as it were.

The Rangers group for qualifying is:

                        Rangers
                       Marseilles
                      CSKA Moscow
                       FC Brugges

I think this gives them a very good chance of going all the way. My
concern would not be Marseilles but the Russians as all the Russian
clubs seem to be doing well in Europe this year. Good news to miss
Milan & PSV at this stage. Don't know the dates for the games yet.

I think that ITV will be covering them also, but not sure if they will
be live. I think that they will only be showing the games that rangers
will be involved in. Given that not all ITV regions were going to
cover the Elland Rd tie until the last minute (eg Thames), then there
is no guarantee that it will be national coverage.

I suppose if Yorkshire Tv cover it, the theme tune will be "It should
