Aston Villa

Some people's predictions will be downed not on the pitch but in the
warmth of Lancaster Gate (if that's still where the draw takes place).
The chance of none of your selections meeting each other until the
semi-final (assuming that they do not lose to someone else) is just
under 8/1 against.
Even assuming that the probability of each of your selections
chances of winning each match are 80% (on the high side, I would
think), you have a chance of just over 3/1000 of picking the
semi-finalists correctly!
After that given more reasonable odds of 50% chance per game for the
semis and final, the chance of picking all 4 semi- finalists and the
winner would be just under 1/1000 !
Will anyone do it ??

I was watching the 1989 FA Cup final video the other day and have just
realised that three of the players so instrumental in the first goal are no
longer with the club. Sheedy lost possession in the Liverpool half. Beardsley
laid the ball back for Nicol on the right-side. Nicol then played a superb ball
over the Everton defence and the majestic Steve McMahon ran forward before
playing a superb ball to the on rushing Aldo to shoot superbly past Southall.

   Barry,
I have to agree with your comments above. I was watching the draw
myself last Sunday and remarked to a friend how utterly boring Graham Kelly was.
His appearance and manner of speech would put one to sleep. He has been like
this for the last couple of years and surely football needs a more vivacious
and lively image than this person portrays.

My sentiments exactly. This is all part of the FA's bid to shake up
English football and thrust it's way into the next millenium as a bold
and sexy, modern, organisation. Dour, grey expressionless faces, names

I think some apologies should be forthcoming to Saint & Greavsie. They might be
a couple of ..... ( fill in the blank ), and the draws for the Rumblelows cup
may have been more at home on the panto stage, but at least they gave some
entertainment, to what is, let's face it, a pretty dull 10 minutes, of watching
2 men taking balls out of bags, or in the case of the F.A. Cup draw 2 cardboard
cut outs of men, with another calling the teams.

| | With just 2 replays to be decided the 3rd Round is almost complete.
Out of 23 participants in our little competition, only 1 has come
through unscathed.
Congratulations to Mr. McGrath whose selections Everton, West Ham,
Swindon and Man. Utd. are all through.
11 of us got 3 teams through and could be joined by another gentleman
if his last selection Burnley can profit from the replay of the
abandoned game they were in the process of losing.
So far nobody has disappeared without trace.

| 135.35 | The game of musical chairs continues | SHIRE::ROQUET::DIXON |  | Thu Feb 27 1992 14:16 | 18 |
| | Here we are with the 6th round in front of us.
How things have changed. Mr. McGrath who got all 4 teams through Round 3
has disappeared as have Messrs. Anderson and Rayner.
10 of us still have 2 teams left, but I have (along with Des Breadie)
fallen victim to the draw. Both our remaining teams Liverpool and Villa
meet in the 6th round.
We are guaranteed to lose 1, both on the other hand we are the only
people with a guaranteed semi-finalist.
Out of the maximum 30 points, the top score possible is 20 points
for Mr. Robertson with Forest (winners) and Liverpool and Mr. Moran
with Chelsea (winners) and Forest still left in.
There is also the intriguing possibility if Liverpool win, of
Mr. Cunniffe sharing a picture of himself with 2 other people !
 |
| 135.36 | Competition update | SHIRE::ROQUET::DIXON |  | Tue Mar 24 1992 15:35 | 30 |
| | After the 6th round most of the competitors have now reached their
limits :
Messrs. Watterson, Wilson, Blythe, Kumar, Blake, Rayner, Anderson,
        McGrath and Moran
have no further interest and thus have scored 0 points.
Messrs. O'Donnell, Sant, Robertson, Shaughnessy, Lundon, O'Hagan,
         Shallom, Hawley, Spencer and Strage
predicted 1 quarter finalist each but did not select this team as
their "Winners" and thus have scored 5 points.
Messrs. Cunniffe, Breadie, Dixon and Liney
predicted 1 quarter finalist correctly, this also being their
choice as "Winners".
If Liverpool win the Cup then Messrs. Cunniffe, Breadie and Dixon
will be joint winners on 15 points.
If Norwich win then Mr. Liney will be the sole winner on 15 points.
If neither "The Pool" nor "The Canaries" win the trophy then 14 lucky people
will share the famous Cunniffe photo including Mr C. himself !
