County.
Being up here in Scotland I do tend to loose track of my home team and
would be happy if someone could add a wee note every now and again to
let me know how good/bad they are doing even if you happen to support
the oposition.

| Derby v Oxford was the Central match live yesterday. Derby looked
impressive in the middle third of the field but missed their
opportunities in the Oxford box. Oxford's new keeper Paul Reece was
outstanding in goal and duly received Greavsies MOTM.
Mike Ford played well at full back for United. Derby paid for the
wasted chances when John Durnin volleyed the winner for United with 12
minutes remaining. Most impressive for Derby were the two centre backs
Wassall and Short, most disappointing imo was Gabbiadini.
Derby's �10 million team continue to struggle in the bottom half while
Oxford's team of has-beens and never was's move into the top half and
look a good outside bet for the play-offs.
Has anybody else noticed the striking resemblance between Craig Short
and John Merrick ???? Maybe it is time to start a topic discussing
footballing uglies and lookalikes ?????

Hey up mi duck,
I know its been some two months since you compiled your report on
the Oxford game, but I'd given up the ghost and thought I must be the
only follower of the Rams within the Corporation.
Up here in Jock Land I support Dunfermline Athletic "THE PARS" and
I'm even a seaon ticket holder I don't know why 'cause if you arrive at
East End Park by 2.45 you could find yourself playing mind you if you
are foolish enough to arrive at 2.30 you can have the choice of being
captain or manager.In fact they are similar at present to the Rams in
that they don't appear to be capable of winning on home soil.
Anyway Brian many thanks for the report and I will look forward to
your next.
Are you from Derby if so where abouts.

Sorry to disappoint you but I am an Oxford man. I can understand the
confusion though - you don't get that many unbiased match reports in
this conference, in fact in this topic you don't get match reports.
Derby were the Central match last week away at Swindon. Derby once
again had numerous chances which they missed before tucking 4 away.
After cruising to a 3 goal lead they managed to give 2 away and score
another themselves in the last 2 minutes. To finish Maskell missed
from the spot in injury time.
Thoroughly entertaining, open game - both teams contributing. Since my
last entry Derby's 10 million team look a good outside bet for
promotion while Oxford drift further into the bottom half of the table.

vmt for the match report which gives me a little idea as to how the
RAMS are getting on especially from someone who gives a unbias opinion.
As you can imagine we are not likely to get Central matches up here
as its all ayes and ochs and men wearing frocks.. whereas down there
its more of a "al right mi duck do you fancy a pint a mild.(or is it
real ale down Oxford way..thats what Inspector Morse drinks)..
I must agree I too feel that we are promotion contenders but we
must string a few home wins together first.
Once again thanks mi duck keep tuning in to Central and any
snippets are welcome.

Hello Eric and Brian
I have something in common with both of you that is I am or was a
fervent Derby fan when I was younger and saw them win the
championship twice in the heady days of the 70's . I am not so much
a fan now but always look out for the scores and obvisously am well
pleased when the boys win.
I notice Brian you have not put in a match report from the manor ground
where I saw Derby avenged the result from earlier in the year I heard
that you were a little unlucky though. Don't get me wrong as I'm not having
a go at you as I said I have something in common with you and this is that
I used to live in Oxford until recently moving to Galway. We lived
there for 10 happy years a place I really call home.
Anyway this isn't the reason for my entree in here....
Derby 3 Sheff. Wed. 3
Watched the game on Sky monday night in a pub and had a really good
night as it was a great cup game.
I thought before the game that Derby would win this game but I was
very disappointed in their lack of passing ability as I thought it
would be better considering the amount of money they have invested in
new players. However Sheff Wed are probably the most inform team at the
moment and I suppose you couldn't expect any more as we were the
underdogs.
The match started at a cracking pace but with definetly Sheffield the
better and more purposeful team. After 9 mins a through ball from
Waddle to Bright resulted in the Derby rb tripping and a penalty was
given. Sheridan who was marked man to man bt Pembridge?? (I don't know
many of the Derby players these days so your have to excuse me if I
don't know their name s or miss spell them) took it and scored. Derby
tried to rally but were hopelessly outclassed and maybe were fortunate
not to have gone further behind. In the 29th minute the Derby lb
received the ball and released a shot of tremendous power from fully
35 yds which hit the bar and rebounded off Woods into the goal.
Derby still lacked any attacking ideas except the big hook up the
middle and Wednesday still impressed with Waddle always looking
dangerous. It was Warhurst who then played a sweet 1/2 with Waddle
that scored next unchallenged so good was the pass from Waddle.
At Half-time it was 1-2 and Wednesday looked good and if they continued
to play well they would win easily and as for Derby I was a little
disappointed.
The second half started like the first but with this time Shefield not
playing and with a few haevy challenges, Derby were starting to take
control 1st Marco Gabbo scored a great individual goal of great
strength and determination (he was probably Derbys best player) and
then Kitson scored his 21st of the season (the only thing he did
alnight) a header on the back post in the 78th minute (i think??).
The unbelievable was happening Derby were actually winning....
I think this was their down fall as they didn't know if to attack or
defend and as they could't control the game they were bound to get
caught.That man Waddle again provided the perfect throughball to Jemson
who pulled it back to Warhurst to score his second (11 in his 10 games
and 17 in all not bad for a centrehalf eh?) Waddle could of had a
penalty in the dying mins but that would of been harsh on Derby who
battled really hard and deserved another crack at it.
I still fancy I'll chances next week as our away form is far better
than our home so i'll let you know how it goes Eric. Its St. Patricks
Day here next Wednesday but I'm still hoping it will be shown in some
pub here, fingers crossed eh!

Many thanks for the match report . I happened to be down at Derby
visiting my father and was unable to get a match ticket nor was I able
to watch it live on Satelite and therefor had to make due listening to
it on Radio Derby ( I think they should stick to traffic news ) and
watched the highlights on BBC. But this week I back in the comfort of
my own house and will be glued to my Sky Sports with a glass of Grouse
in one hand and a pint of Guiness draught Bitter in the other. I feel
my drink will be there for celebration as opposed to sorrow for I think
that the Rams away form will carry them through to the semis.

I went ot the Oxford-Derby match at the Manor recently. Not a lot to
say about really. Oxford produced another dire performance lacking any
imagination and Derby were slightly worse. Arthur Cox has put together
a very aggressive team (I really mean a bunch of dirty b********) who
on the day did not perform. I can't believe they are that bad week in
week out.
Highlight of the day was Brian Horton invading the pitch after Oxford
were denied a blatant penalty when Short caught the ball in his own
penalty area. My inside contact tells me that Cox and Horton in fact
came to blows in the corridor outside the changing rooms. The hatred
stemmed from incidents during the game but goes back to when Cox kicked
Horton out of a club when Horton was an apprentice and told him he
would never make a footballer.
To be fair Cox wasn't far out as the truth is in fact that Horton will
never make a manager.
So you lived in Oxford Keith ?? Whereabouts ?? Surley you visited the
Manor during the glory days of the mid 80's.

Brian,
I too went to this game, and have to agree with your comments around a
dire performance from both sides. This has to have been the worst game
of football I have watched in my life (sunday mornings included), to
make matters worse some git demanded �7 from me for the 'privelege'. The
kiddies sprint at the start was the most entertaining occurrence of the
day ! What surprised me even more was that a week later DC almost beat
S Weds in the cup, HOW ??

Hello
Well we had Paddys day here in Galway yesterday which mean't a day off
and down the pub for what seemed the whole town a great party was had
by all!!
Went on to see the game in a blurry kind of a way which was probably
the best way to see it as it never matched the first meeting.
Wednesday definatly deserved to win as they completely outclassed
Derby who although huffed and puffed never looked either good enough
or lucky enough to score. Warhurst again scored which I thought was a
good opportunists goal which was made easy by the mercy lung of the
Derby keeper (who apart from that had a very good game).
Anyway good luck to Wednesday as they look a well balanced and
class team especially Waddle who again was superb.
As for Derby well !!!!!!!
I could think of a better way of spending 10 mill.......
As it is and seeing them only 3 times this season they are certainly
not what I expected and although a young side definatly need some
experience in the side especially in the centre midfield area where
they just need someone to put a foot on it and pass properly (just
basics really) as its kick and run at the moment.
Cox must be a worried man at the moment.

Sorry to here the game was awful as obvisously Nev backs up your story
but I think It couldn't of been as bad as the meeting the two teams had
at the Manor when Shilts was in goal and both teams were struggling at
the bottom of div 2 (or was it div 1) anyway the game ended 0-0 and I
think that season Derby stayed up and Oxford went down (not sure if
this is correct but the game was most certainly the worst I have been
to or can remember).
Yes Brian I have been up the Manor many times and have generally seen
some great games especially one of which I had a counterfeit ticket too
see as it was impossible to get a proper one so a friend drew up some
tickets (which were bloody awful but surprisingly and thankfully
worked). The game in question was when Man U came down in the Milk
(???) cup and the U's won 2-1 a great and very exciting night. I was
also there in their finest hour at Wembley when they completely out
played a Jim Smith's QPR, great times for the U's. Sorry to here their
struggling again but as you rightfully said already Horton is no
manager and while he remains you will struggle.
We used to live in Botley and miss the place greatly as we have a lot
of good friends and fond memories in the city of the dreaming spires.

While your on about great nights at the Manor ground - what about 18th
January 1984 - Oxford v Everton, Milk cup, Oxford 1-0 up 82 minutes gone,
Kevin Brock's dodgy back pass is intercepted by Adrian Heath, he rounds
the keeper and equalises. Everton won the replay 4-1 and went onto
lots of Wembley appearances, League titles, cup wins etc etc.

Yeah Paul I was there as well and for the replay up at Goodison.
I did wonder at the time and for a few years after what would have
happened to Everton if Brock hadn't of made that pass. They were a bloody
awful team at the time bumping along the bottom of the 1st division
and just about to be dumped out the cup by a 3rd division side, the
daggers were already out for Kendall and then that pass!!!!!
All change and history now tells the story....
Just goes to show what a funny old game it is

| Yep, Kevin Brock wasn't a bad player - has he left Newcastle now ??
I was at the Manor the night of the back pass. At that time Oxford
felt they could beat anybody and would have beaten Everton if it wasn't
for Brocky's back pass. The replay at Goodison was only memorable for
the snow, a Hinslewood twenty yarder and the appalling attitude of the
Liverpool police who herded us around all night. That oil stuff they
put on the fences at Goodison took me ages to get off my coat as well.
Revenge was taken 2 or 3 years later when Oxford beat Everton at the
Manor in the league 1-0 thanks to a Les Philips goal. This more or
less handed the title to Liverpool and went a long way to keeping
Oxford in the 1st division.

I'll always fondly remember Brock for that backpass... didn't he score
a cracking free kick at Old Trafford about the same time ?
Brian, you can't really slag off the Liverpool police after the way the
Oxford police treated us - wedged in a narrow little alley behind the
ground and some ******* released a claustrophobic police dog on us.
Then we were crammed into two thirds of that poxy end they give to away
supporters - I missed half the game, surging up and down. I've got the
game on video and I can just make out myself disappearing under a mass
of bodies.
Whatever happened to that nice Robert Maxwell chappie......

Well I see that Derby beat Swindon Town 2-1 at home with Kitson and
Pembridge getting the the DC's goals before a late reply from town.
I don't know too much about the details but I'll try and post them
after I speak to my brother who lives in Swindon as it was on live on
sunday. Anyway it was a good win as ST are well up there.
From what I have seen of DC they will be pushed to get a play-off place
what do you think??
My thoughts on the promotion places are:-
1. Geordies
2. Pompey

3. Hammers
4. Lecister
5. Swindon
6. DC (hoping against all odds)
I noticed that both the Geordies and the Hammers lost last night and
Pompey and LC won again (LC have won 6 in a row). Are the top two
feeling the pressure I don't think it matters with the Geordies though
as they are too far in front to worry, but I think the Hammers could be
feeeling it a bit eh? Still though there are lot of points that can be
won or lost yet.

lots of people around us who are bitterly disappointed about yesterday's
outcome.
However, I can only say that Derby rarely play to the standards
expected of them and that they therefore do not deserve the leap into

| Apparently he was playing badly - v Porsmouth he was substituted after
about 30 minutes! - and was told to have some time off to rest by Jim
Smith. Because of World Cups, qualifying for World Cups, American
tournaments, etc. he hasn't had a decent break for years.
That's the excuse.

| Daryl Powell has done things like this before... Jim Smith managed him
at Portsmouth before taking him to Derby. I think he was right in what
he said after the game that basically he wouldn't have done it with
intent. In the past I've seen him do 'silly' things that have got him
in trouble. So no he probably didn't do it on purpose, however he came
in late, studs up...
Some refs would've pulled the yellow, and just as many the red. Perhaps
he was unlucky to have a ref who likes red (it turned the game aswell)
but basically he needs to stop getting the rush of blood and doing
silly things, he should be mature enough by now.

| We got to see this game in the States on ESPN2 last night, and I'd
agree that the sending off was rather harsh. However, Derby seemed to
play better with 10 men! The first half was awful soccer from both
teams - directionless, sloppy, passes a high school team would never
make. The second half was a bit better, and Collymore's goal was very
well taken. But overall, not one of the better games I've seen.

Do you know what the guys name is? A few seasons ago Jim Smith got a
Johnny Foreigner keeper (might have been him) into Portsmouth, but
there were problems, injuries and work permits etc. Can't remember
which country he was from, but his name was Mart Poom (someit like
that). He's about 12 feet tall, blonder than that spicey girl, and
probably as shite as her in goal!

Had to larf at a Reuters report I saw this morning...apparantly in the
game against Nottm Forest, a Derby fan noticed that the team had 4
non-EU players during the warm-up (rule is 3 max)....he shouted over to
the bench and they immediately changed the keeper (Poom). Not often the
fans get a player change by screaming the bench !!!

Derby boss Jim Smith flies to Italy tomorrow in a bid to sign AC Milan
midfielder Stefano Eranio.
The 30-year-old Italian international is out of contract and available on a free
transfer.
Eranio would be Smith's first signing since guiding the Rams to safety in the
Premiership, and would join a strong overseas contingent at Derby, who move to a
new stadium next season.

In Italy, they're reporting this as a done deal. Not a bad bit of
business by Derby. Eranio is not a spectacular player, but he rarely
has a poor game...very much in the Di Matteo mould.
