| | The Dandies have made their best start to a season since the
    Smith/Scott partnership took charge .
Our only significant close season signing was Theo ten Caat from
Gronigen . From what I have seen of him so far ( i.e. 45 mins
against Airdrie ) he looks like quite an exciting prospect and
another good value for money purchase from Holland .
Another new face to the first team line up is David Winnie who
has been filling the left back position for the last few matches ,
since the departure of the money grabbing Beano Addict to the Huns .
Didn't he look over the moon at the end of the Hearts game on
    Saturday , fnarf , fnarf .
Our first two matches away to Airdie and Falkirk were both stuffy
affairs but the main thing is that we came away with both points
which is something which we have possibly failed to do in the previous
two seasons against similar opposition away from home .
Saturdays match was a different story , mainly due to the fact that
Dunfermline looked very weak in all departments with the exception of
McCall , Kozma and Rhodes who had an outstanding game .
It is now essential to get a good result against the Tims on Saturday
to consolidate our good position thus far .

                                      Gillhaus 28 mins

The Dons returned to their winning ways this afternoon collecting
two points away from home against last seasons Scottish Cup Winners .
Robert Connor returned to the side after injury , replacing David
Winnie at left back with Mason , Van der Ark and Gillhaus up front .
Jess failed to recover from an injury sustained in Scotlands under
     21 match in midweek .
After surviving some early pressure from Motherwell , Aberdeen came
close with an effort from Theo ten Caat before Van der Ark crossed
from the right to allow Hans Gillhaus to score the only goal of the
     match .
Van de Ven replaced the injured ten Caat in the second half and Booth
replaced Mason late on . The best chance of the second half fell to
Gillhaus who charged down a Billy Thompson clearance only to norrowly
miss the target from 18 yards .
Neil Simpson recieved a tremendous reception from the modest Aberdeen
crowd in his first appearance against his old club .

| |
                ABERDEEN 0 - 1 BK 1903 COPENHAGEN

Aberdeen made the worst possible start to their European campaign
last night . With very few exceptions , it was a thoroughly miserable
performance by the Dons who failed to break down a solid looking
Copenhagen defence . In fact the number 3 was outstanding and I think
we should buy him because Connor is absolutely crap , although in the
eyes of our beloved Mr. Smith he seems to be good enough to keep David
Winnie out of the side ( I think not somehow ) .
Gillhaus had the ball in the net midway through the first half but was
ruled offside and he also hit the bar in the second half with a
    spectacular diving header .
During the last half hour of the game unprecedented scenes were
witnessed from the Pittodrie stands with chants of `Smithy must go' ,
and `One Willie Miller' , to the obvious embarrasment of Mr. Miller
who was sitting on the bench . I can't say I entirely agree with these
views , but as long as the likes of Robert Connor and Brian Grant hold
their places on the form they have shown of late I can see no
alternative but to make some form of change to the situation up top .
I must admit that I don't think Alex Smith will be sacked . Aberdeen
have never been known to sack their managers and also going by the
boards seeming reluctance to part with any money I think that they
probably feel that Smith is the very man for them .
The second leg of this tie is far from being a lost cause , if the
right players can play to their full potential , they are more than
capable of beating this Danish side .

| 62.5 | Jocky Scott for Dunfermline | PAKORA::SPATON |  | Sat Sep 21 1991 08:19 | 9 |
| | Jocky Scott today takes over as manager of Dunfermline . I am more
disappointed than surprised at this move as Scott along with Drew
Jarvie provided the main motivating force for the Dons .
Jarvie now moves into the number 2 spot along side Smith with Willie
Miller moving from reserve team coach to first team coach . Ex Hibs and
St. Mirren player Neil Cooper has been purchased to take charge of the
    reserves .
The Dons take on Hibs today , looking to regain some respectability
after their worst string of home results for over 20 years .

             Attendace : 36000+

Aberdeen were forced to make several changes because of injuries to
Stephen Wright , David Winnie and Hans Gillhaus . Van de Ven and
Connor came in as full backs with Jess , Booth and Mason up front .
Rangers also had to make changes as Gough had a recurrence of his
toilet parts related injury and McCoist was probably helping him get
better . I think some of them daft Russians were released from
international duty to make an appearance .
Things seemed pretty even until late on in the second half when
Aberdeens obvious class showed through and Theo ten Caats persistance
in midfield paid off as he played a lovely through ball for Jess to
shoot home from 12 yards .
Brian Grant settled things ten minutes later ensuring both points
     for the Dons .
This result puts Aberdeen into second place in the league , to points
     behind Hearts .

| | The aforementioned Flossie was last seen having signing talks with
Aberdeen F.C. Chairman Dick Donald with a view to playing him at left
back in the next game against Rangers . The Dons board were said to be
impressed by the way in which the four legged full back was able to
keep his feet and kick the ball in a match recently where young Flossie
turned out for Forres Mechanics reserves .
It is thought that the deal will probably fall through because the
Dons will not be able to match the three figure sum set down by the

| | A few of the problems which have combined to create Aberdeen's
problems this season are as follows :-

Massive injury problems which the current squad hasn't been strong
enough to cope with . Namely Wright, Mcliesh, McKimmie, Connor, Grant,
     Mason, Watson, Gibson .

No adequate replacement for David Robertson who signed for Rangers
in the close season . Hopefully Portaloo will find his way to swapping
Tom Boyd for the shirtlifter to solve our problems in that
     departement .

A complete lack of motivation and commitment has been most evident in
recent weeks . With certain players, "and they know who they are"
being guilty of this crime . The fact that Jim Bett has been the team
captain for the majority of the season has done very little to help
this cause in the absence of a Miller or Mcliesh type character .

Aberdeen still haven't solved their goalscoring problems . To
employ a similar comparison to one used by a Celtic supporter earlier
on this season (i.e. Celtic haven't had a decent defender since Billy
McNeil stopped playing) , Aberdeen haven't had a decent striker since
Joe Harper , or more recently Eric Black or Frank McDougall .
Jess and Booth are good enough players but are not recognised out and
out goal scorers , and the Dutch pair of Gillhaus and the Tree have gone
off the boil to say the least .
Finally just to correct the previous noter who is under the impression
that the Dons have had a great start to the season . Aberdeen have played
one good game this season , that being the 0-2 defeat of Rangers at
Ibrox . The remainder of the performances have been rather laclustre
and not a patch on those during the last quarter of last season .

                 Grant,
                 Booth,
                Roddie,

I attended this mid table clash with the same fear and trepidation
with which I have attended the last few Aberdeen fixtures because , as
you can probably gather from my previous few entries ( ooer missus ) ,
I have been none too impressed by the performances of late .
We went one down after only a few minutes through a penalty conceded
by the horse type fellow who I am sorry to say has formed the backbone
of our defense for the last 1.5 seasons . Luckily the referee realised
that the laddy Arkins is obviously prone to falling down a lot
otherwise the visitors from Tayside would have had several more
     penalties awarded to them .
Eventually the Dons managed to claw their way back into the match and
Jess missed a good chance after Booth beat the `offside trap' on the
right and put in a good cross . Jess made ammends a few minutes later
by finishing well after Kane headed on a ten Caat cross from the left.
Big Pete then got himself sent off after a second bookable offence
i.e. waist high challenge on Pizza Puss Wright .
In the second half it was basically a case of Jess taking the piss
out of the Saints defense for the entire 45 mins . It was smart to
watch . The second goal came from a Jess cross from the right , Booth
headed down and Grant finished . The third was very similar to Keith
Wrights winner against the Huns at Hampden in the Skol Cup Semi
earlier this season with Bett providing the cross and Booth headind
home . The fourth came from sub. Andy Roddie who finished well after
good work from Jess on the right again .
I'm not sure what it is but Jess seems to play so much better when
Gillhaus isn't in the team and Booth is . Maybe it's the fact that he
doesn't have to protect himself from anal abuse for the entire game .

| | I had the choice of watching any one of the eight Italian clubs on
parade last night, but I plumped for Torino vs. Aberdeen...and very
entertaining it was too. Five goals and some excellent football.

Aberdeen were two up after 25 minutes and I must say it's long time
since I've seen such a relaxed, intelligent performance from a British
club away from home (in front of a very partizan crowd). Ok, Torino
managed to claw their way back and will take a 3-2 advantage to
Scotland, but they are considerably weaker away from home. Torino's
second half performance would have beaten most teams and one-sided as
it was, Aberdeen continued to play with great calm, a far cry from the
usual "hustle and bustle" of British teams when they travel. Pick of
the bunch for me were Richardson, Mcleish and McKimmie. And yes, I
think Aberdeen are favorites to go through.

A mark of how ruffled Torino were was the two-footed tackle by Annoni
on McKimmie (?) after the second goal. At a time when "sending off the
last defender" (following a professional foul) is such a big issue,
it's remarkable how defenders who commit violent fouls on the halfway
line - fouls that could endanger an opponent's career - invariably get
    away with a booking.

Last I heard was that they might be thrown out of europe and that
Aberdeen will be invited to take there place against Arsenal in the
    next round.

As the big East Fife v Arbroath game was called off due to lack of
interest yesterday I travelled up to Tannidice for the United v
Aberdeen game....1st thing to mention is that it was bloody cold.
2nd thing is there were no pies left at time.
If this is the best United can do then they will struggle. Daily played
ok and at least showed some imagination.Petric looked calm at the back
and seems like a good buy.
Aberdeen, well, they strolled thru this game and were never going to be
beaten. Jess's goal was well taken and a real bute. Wee Joe Millar
tormented Malpass all day long and gave him the runaround most of the
time. Malpass has lost pace. Aberdeen should have won by two and
perhaps three. Rangers & Celtic have a real challenger for the
championship. and it aint Dundee United.

Me finx Willie Miller's job has got to be on the line after Saturday's
result. The Dons face Dundee United & Celtic in their next two matches,
and I fear that nothing short of six points for the Sheep will suffice.

Personally I feel sorry for Miller. He has the same team + a few
signings this season, as he did in the past two or three when Aberdeen
were raingurs main challengers. I know they have injury problems, but
they have a decent enough sized squad to be able to deal with the
    situation.
Rumours abound from the Granite City that he can't motivate the players
& that very few are happy with his managerial tactics....or apparently
    the lack of them !

I say he'll be out of a job by mid-January ! Anyone else think
    otherwise ?

I think if Willie Miller does not start a winning run then he will be
out of the job very soon. If he can't motivate an Aberdeen side against
Dundee United (The "new firm" clash) and Celtic then he should step
aside before he is pushed. We need a strong Aberdeen side in the league
as they have shown over the years that they are one of the sides who
can challenge the old firm for the honours.

Maybe you could start a topic "101 uses for Don Howe". Obviously

I think killie will probably beat dumferline to stay in the premier.

Then they'll have yet another restructuring of the leagues with a
premier league of 2 teams from glasgow and all the rest in div 4,
div's 3 and 2 will be cancelled and only premier teams will be allowed
    the enter cup competions.

After the first week of each season when all the teams are again
knocked out of europe there will be another meeting to restructure the
    leagues again.

No, I believe that Aberdeen have never been outside the top division.
However, if there IS league reconstruction to keep them up, I would
expect a lot of complaints from Hearts and Hibernian who were two
other "top" teams who had to suffer relegation.

Also.. looks like there could be a chance of Dundee United joining
them, or at least having to play Dundee or Dunfermline in the
    Play-offs.

Aberdeen win only their second game under Roy Aitken but it will
take a wee bit more than this to keep them up. The first goal was
courtesy of a ghastly blunder from Wor Packie but the second was a nice
volley on the blind side of the defence from Brian "Jehovahs Witness"
Irvine. Perhaps the Celtic defence on seeing him coming pretended to be
out (a common trick down my street). Apart from being denied a cast
iron penalty (the refs name was McCluskey you will be surprised to hear)
Celtic did not create many chances.

chance of saving themselves from the dreaded drop to the anonymity of

Hearts won against Motherwell when they had to, hence stopping Aberdeen
    leapfrogging them into 8th spot.

For the record Dundee Utd lost anyway so the sheepies win was
academic. Just in passing, I'm sorry to see United relegated, they have
done some particularly fine stuff in Europe in the past and could often

Roy Aitken has been confirmed permanent (dubious term - as opposed
to caretaker I mean) manager. I wondered if they might leave it till

Well done and good luck to Roy. I just wonder how long it will be

It always seemed strange to me that TV should ignore the play-offs.
Personally I thought the whole idea of the play-offs was to introduce
a bit of end of season excitement as it does in England, and to cover
the whole of the League season then to ignore the nail-biting finish
    seems pretty darn peculiar...

An interesting internet story development in the North of Scotland has
fuelled my paranoia. Now read on.......
<from the Press and Journal 1st Dec 1995>
<Aberdeen FC are to probe a controversial fans' page on the internet because of>
<concerns that the club is being exploited. Computer users linked to the global>
<internet had access to a graphic image of former Dons star Neil Simpson's>
<famous challenge on Rangers' midfielder Ian Durrant.>
The story goes on to describe how Inverurie based web page owner,
Kevin Taylor has had to withdraw the image and a poem ridiculing
Durrant about the tackle.
The Rangers' Supporters Club says the image is "sick" and, although no
comment has been passed on withdrawing Taylor's season ticket,
Aberdeen's General manager, David Johnston, is concerned "about
whether an AFC badge or logo has been used". Aberdeen FC say they
haven't even seen the page!
There is no official Aberdeen web page, but they are planning one to
pass on club info in the future. Sensibly (IMHO), Kevin Taylor has
not commented at this stage.
Kevin's URL is: http://www.norcol.ac.uk/~kevin/afc_WWW/afc.html
This seems like a subject for scrutiny if the club do take any
dramatic action and it also acts as a warning about how protective
clubs can be about corporate identities/logos etc.. Are we really
able to use their logo on a list shirt for instance?
