| 22.1 | Benfica will win it, again. | TOTH::CHAVES |  | Wed Aug 14 1991 17:18 | 12 |
| | League play starts this Sunday but the best game on the schedule,
Porto-Sporting has been postponed until December because Porto is
playing in some tournament in Spain.

I expect no surprises this year. Benfica and Porto will finish 1,2,
in the standings with the third place finisher at least 10 points
behind. Sporting will likely lead the table until christmas, as they
always seem to do, and then fade away as always.

| |
As usual JC shows his great insight into our league, of 18 teams,
in a country with less people then London, and whose wealth is
80% with Benfica, 7% with Sporting, 5% with Porto, 1% with Boavista
2% with the other 512 teams, and 5% in wine!

Valdo has gone to PSG...good luck Paris! he has great skill, for
your eyes only, because there is hardly any production out of him,
like goals or assists. He is no Chris Waddle!

In the past years all portuguese power-houses ( read mighty-mouses)
have lost world class players and they talk in building world class
teams i.e. Futre, Barros. Now, all other youngsters dream of Italy,
and Spain, and basically of how to get a fast contract before I
    turn 22.

This championship will be boring. Sporting has 7 World-class Under-20
starters, which means that will be good for them in 2/3 years if
they stick around (Cadete is talking Italy already after one season
of slaloms); Porto has a coach who finally realized he should keep
almost the same line-up as last year and add the new guys if he
can, and stop saying stupid things like " in this 34 man squad they
are all so good i can not see how to cut to 26". Mr. Carlos Alberto
Parreira - get another [coaching] job. (His 15 year curriculum includes
several championships in the past few years in ...Japan!).

Benfica, who has 3 of the best youths to have come out of their
"school-system" in Rui Bento, Rui Costa, Pualo Sousa, also has Paulo
Madeira and Paiva (ex-Maritimo Madeira), and a few other world-class
nightmares like Thern, Schwarz and the tall swedish forward
Magsomething. Bottom line: good enough for first/second in Portugal.

Then we will have a war for 4th place, almost the same as saying
a war not to be demoted. Last season between the 19th and 5th tehre
were 3 or 4 points difference (can't recall), and between 4th and
3rd, over 15, and so forth! So the war will involve the rest of
the field, but Boavista, Guimaraes, Salgueiros and Beira-Mar are
for real. The others are bluff!

So, off to watch a league with more enthusiasm. Football League?
    Calcio?

No JC comes from the "bourgeoisie" as all right wingers in
Portugal were Benfica fans and drew each other. Sporting
was the team of the liberals and would be even more popular
but: the bourgeoisie's team won two ECCs with an extraordinary
player named Eusebio who started his soccer at Sporting of Lourenzo

| | Yeah! Benfica stunk....moved the ball well from their end all the way
into the Boavista end but could not finish anything. Boavista, on the
other hand, played well on defense and took advantage of the one real
opportunity they created and walked away with a well deserved 2 points.

Nothing to worry about. Benfica always loses 1 or 2 games/season
and this was one of them. In the end we will be in first place and
Boavista will be in 4th, just behind Sporting and way behind Porto
    and benfica.

Boavista were top the previous week, when one of their new African

What is happening here...JC, (Joe Chaves not Jesus Christ), had said
sometime earlier that all was back to normal when Benfica beat
Guimaraes and Porto beat someoneelse 5-0 and SPorting tied at
    Braga!!???

Hmmm. Benfica tied at Estoril? AT least SPorting tied the Cup finalists
and last year's 5th place in league...I am talking about Beira-Mar.

Boavista maybe surprising but they have good players/coach to do fairly
    well.

| | Yeah, last night I watched the highlites of the Inter game. They do
appear to have a pretty good team but, don't let it get to your head.
Comes the end of the seasion it will be Benfica and Porto will have the
top 2 spots, Sporting will have third and whomever finishes 4th will be
at least 10 points behind Sporting. Hope I'm wrong but its been this
way for so long and i can't see any indication its about to change.

| | Sorry to say, but Sporting lost to Beira Mar. I watched the game and
Sporting scored a beautiful goal that was disallowed. The player
from Sporting was on the ground and in no way involved in the play and
the ref called for the offside. It was a shame because Sporting
attacked during the entire game and deserved a couple of goals but
    those are the breaks.

I heard Sporting tied Porto Wednesday. Any details. A benficista told
me that Sporting dominated the game but couldn't put the ball in the
    net. Not a typo - a benficista -

Sporting has some great young talent and in a year or two should
dominate. Hopefully they won't lose those players.

| | Its no surprise to see Porto, Benfica and Sporting starting to appear
near the top of the table. From what I've seen so far this season, and
it hasn't been much, Boavista appears to have the better chance of
upsetting one of the big three. I don't think they will win the league,
but second or third place is a possibility. The Nigerian Ricky is an
exciting player to watch. I'm looking forward to watching him tomorrow
against Inter. It'll be interesting to see what Boavista can do against
an Inter defense that is less then top grade and one they know they can
penetrate as evident in the first leg. The chances they blew in that
game may end up costing Boavista advancement.

Benfica is not what we Benfiquistas have grown to expect. I don't think
they're strong enough to keep Porto from the title and it wouldn't
surprise me to see Erikson (SP?) move on after this season.
Sporting will surprise everyone if they win anything and Guimares is
just a pretender. If you're going to place a bet on the Portuguese
league put your money on Porto. (boy, do I hate to say that...)

Anyone know the Farense V Porto and Salgueiros V Guimaraes scores ?

J.C. Maybe you can explain why Salgueiros qualified for Europe and
Beira Mar did not, as all the league tables I have seen give both teams
on 36pts with an equal amount of games won, drawn and lost.
Salgueiros have a goal differance of 32-48 and Beira Mar 40-49!!

Also, Tirense got relegated with 33pts and a g.d. of 39-50. But teams
above them had the same points, but g.d.'s of 30-51, 34-46, and 34-51.
What is going on???? Can anyone explain?

Also, I write for an Arsenal fanzine, and would like some info on
Benfica's players so that I can do a write up for the next issue, can
    anyone help?

I visited this fine stadium on holiday two months ago, and will

The score you listed was played last Wednesday, I think, and was
a make-up game. Guimares lost on Sunday to allow Benfica to regain
a share of the top spot. It should be only a matter of time before
Porto and Benfica occupy the top 2 slots, confortably clear of everyone
    else.

As for Manuel Guimares, I asked around and nobody ever heard of him.
Then again, this is the US and football news from portugal travel slow.

Yes. Its the same Peixe that played in the recent jrs world Cup.
He plays for Sporting as do several (I think 4) other players from
the Jr world cup champions. Another youngster from that group that
    comes to mind is Leal.

    News:

    - Porto president Pinto da Costa was hit by a car following the Porto
vs Benfica match. He was injured but survived. Not so lucky was Porto'
vice-president. he was involved in an accident 2 days later and died
from injuries suffered. I don't know his name.

    - An old rumor has resurfaced. It has the Swede Magnusson going from
Benfica to Arsenal. It seems the teams are having problems agreeing
on a transfer fee. I hope it happens as he has not been playing very
much for Benfica, his place having been taken by the former Dynamo
      Kiev striker Iuran.

    - Next round of the cup is scheduled for 12 January. Benfica will visit
Estdio Do Bonfim to play Setbal in the only macth pitting 2 first
      division teams against each other.

And just for you Mike, Guimares hosts Porto this weekend in a league

    - Benfica continues to olay crap football and were lucky to draw
      away to Salgueiros.

    - Porto continues to be the darling of the referees who gave them a
major assist in their draw away to Guimares. 2 penalties could have
been called against Porto in this game, one of them an obvious tackle
      of Viad in the box.

    - Sporting continues to play the best football in Portugal.

Now that JC have left us, there is no one who's posting fixtures for
the Portugese league in topic 110. I tried yesterday to find fixtures,
    but ity wasn't so easy.

When they drew the fixture last autumn, the only grew for the first
half of the league, and then made another draw in December/January for
the rest. None of the newspapers i called, nor the Swedish Football
Assosiation had the fixtures for spring.

Are there anyone who has those fixtures and can mail them to me? Or if
anyone know where to call to get it. I got a phonenumber to the
Portugese Football Associasion, but the only reply i get is an
answeringmashine saing something in portugese that i don't understand.
    Help would be appeciated.

| 22.55 | Either a tape or a Looooong season | SALES::THILL |  | Mon Jul 13 1992 14:12 | 26 |
| | I saw a game on Telemundo yesterday between Porto and Boavista, with
Boavista winning 2-1. It was in Spanish, but occasionally the announcer
would say a few things in English like, "This is the final match of the
Portugese Championship, and the winner will be the League champions..."

I thought Porto won the league already, and I thought the season was over
in May.... OK, it was probably a tape (as opposed to the live game they
showed last week from Argentina). Could this have been the Cup final,
maybe? I think I might have heard him say something like "copa," but my
ear for Spanish doesn't always catch these things. It that case, his
English translator should be fired, since anyone knows the cup and
league are 2 totally different animals...

The game was a little physical, with several yellow cards (and a few
should-be yellows). The 2 clubs are from the same city, so it must be a
good rivalry. Boavista scored first on a nice header, (Bobo, maybe?) then
Ka[.....]ov, the Russian/Bulgarian/E.European striker completely gagged
when he was in all alone on the Boavista keeper. He didn't even get off
a decent shot, but just pushed the ball wide from maybe 8 yards out. In
the second half, Porto got the equalizer on a very nice free kick from
about 35 yards away, when he blasted the ball perfectly into the corner.
"Ricky" scored the final goal for Boavista after a scramble in front of
    the net.

| | I know it has been almost a year since the last note, so here's an
    update on the 92-93 Championship.

Benfica and Porto are tied for the lead and Porto has a game in hand.
I believe that they will be playing each other at the Stadium of Light
in Lisbon this weekend. Should be an interesting match, considering
Futre has been playing for Benfica for the past month and a half.
Benfica played Sporting of Lisbon a few weeks back an guess who scored
the game winner. Maybe he could do the same against Porto. That would
only be fitting since he has played for Sporting and Porto.

For the Cup - Benfica and Sporting are in the Semi's against Boavista
    and Guimaraes.

I believe they were the team that defeated Benfica 5-2, a few weeks

Luis, I heard that Carlos Queiros is the new Manager for Sporting.
Could you confirm this? If this is true, then it should be good news
for the Sporting supporters. With all that young talent that is in
Sporting, he is the perfect Manager to mold them into a real contender.

    Keep on kicking,

Confirmed, Queiroz is the new manager for Sporting,but....the
supporters are not very happy, indead they are divided! Part of them
really liked Bobby Robson work and are a little bit insecure with this
change. You know, this is the first time that Queiroz is training a first
division team.Till know he trained only the national teams.
This change was a personal decision done by the president Sousa
Cintra. No one was expecting this! The players were also very surprised!
Yesterday Sporting made his first game with Queiroz leading the team.
It was against Beira Mar and they won 1-0.Cadete made the goal at 44
    min.
Next week we`ll have a Benfica-Sporting!!!!!It is going to be a really
    hot game!

Cherbakov, an international russian 22 years old Sporting player, put
an end to his career after a serious car accident yesterday morning.
He`ll never move his legs again....The "portuguese football world" is
in chock. He was,sorry...he is,a great player and a great champion!
Everybody is supporting him ,helping him in this bad moment.
First of all he is a young man that, from now on, will see the life in a
    diferent way...
Sousa Cintra(Sporting president) spoke with the player and he told that
Cherbakov knows what happened to him.Cherbakov said that the legs were
his life,so if there`s no legs, there`s no life....

About the Lisbon classic ,the game was played at Benfica stadium (Luz).
Sporting scored first by Figo at 30m.
In the second half Iuran made the 1-1 at 50 m. At 80m Isaias made the
    victory goal for Benfica.
This was not a very good game but it had a fair winner.

   About the Benfica-Porto....

Well, first of all it was a great game with a good winner.Porto enter
the game very well with Benfica a little bit confused. At 12m Benfica
    had a great chance to score but V.Baia denied the goal.At 36m a Porto`s
defense error caused Benfica`s goal by Ailton.Three minutes late the
key moment of the game:F.Couto, best Porto defender, saw the red card
    after hiting Mozer(Benfica).
    Half-time.
On the second half,Porto risked everything, once again they started
better then Benfica but at 54m R.Costa scored putting an end to Porto`s
hopes. After that,Benfica could have done 3,4 even 5 goals but Baia was
    in a wonderful night.Porto could also made 1,2 even 3 goals but....they
    had no luck at all.
After this game, only Benfica and Sporting have chances to be
    champions,so...everybody`s waiting for the Sporting-Benfica..

    Luis.

    Joe,i`m not pessimist...i`m realist!
You know,Benfica was and still is in a big financial bad moment. They
need (must....) to be champions so they could enter on the milionaire
    champions league, are you understanding?
I think that Benfica is playing very well but even if they weren`t ,i
think they would be in the first place anyway...
They lost to Belenenses on the cup but that was not important...that
competition does not bring money to the club.

Please reply if you (dis)agree with me.

remain in the championship. Injuries could happen, you never know what
may change the second half of the season. I agree that Benfica's form
has been very good of late. I just feel they try to hold on to the
score to early. Hate seeing that type of game. On the other hand the
Sporting - Setubal game was up down action even in overtime.

| | Well, Sporting's new coach has them scoring like crazy. I knew he
would be able to do this with the wealth of youth talent in Sporting.
Half of the team are from the U21 WC teams. The finals should be very
interesting indeed. I see the hype now - Can Robson get revenge on
Sporting or is Queiros the savior that Sporting needed.

I'm just hoping for a great game, since they are both playing very well
    lately.

| | Yes, I do understand portuguese. Though it should be better but I came
to the States when I was 3. I have been there 5 or 6 times. I used to
go every 3 to 4 years. It's been almost 12 years now and man do I miss
it. I have so many fond memories. I plan on going next year. Anyway
back to soccer, the game this Saturday could decide the championship.
The eagles will be in the lions den, I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. Most of my friends are benficistas and we will be watching the
match this Saturday. After Benfica's performance this past week, it
shouldn't be much of a match. One never knows what will happen when
the Sporting - Benfica rivalry is ignited.(This match should be posted
    in the Predictions note)

    Keep on kicking,

    Porto-Sporting
    ==============

| | Yes, unfortuantely I saw the match with 6 Benfica supporters, while I
was the only one cheering on Sporting. As usual, Sporting dominated
the play in the first half but Benfica was winning 3 - 2 at half.
Should I say, Joao Pinto II was beating Sporting 3 - 2. He was on
fire, he scored the first 3 goals for Benfica and could have had at
least one more but chose to leave it for Isaias instead. At half time
the Benfica fans were very worried and they expected to lose the match
in the second half because the defense for Benfica was playing poorly
and if it wasn't for the play of Joao Pinto would have been losing.
Then when the second half started I couldn't beleive my eyes, Paul
Torres was substituted by Pacheco. What was the Sporting coach
thinking? Paul Torres has one of the hardest shots in Portugal and is
one of the best attacking defenseman in Portugal. Once I saw that I
told them not to worry Benfica would definately score more and that
Sporting was done! Sure enough the 3 goal for Benfica all came from
Benfica right wing, Pacheco blew it every time. That's life. The
championship goes to Benfica and the cup will probably go to Porto.
Sporting, as usual, will be on the outside looking in.

You're right Heribert . But it was a very strange bomb threat ....
Did you know that the police that went to the local was the "normal"
police , without bomb detectores and all those things they use to find
    the bombs ?
    Very strange indeed....

As a Porto fan , i could say that we're playing the best football since
1987 ( when we were european champions) .
Bobby Robson is really a good trainer. Did anyone saw the last european
game against Sampdoria(ITA) ? There's only one word to explain Porto's
    exibition : perfect !

Dispite the bad results Artur Jorge has been already confirmed to be
the coach for the next season.
Here in Portugal we all know that it's not Artur's fault...
Just to let you know that only 6 or 7 players will remain for the next

Two young Sporting fans ( 17 and 20 years old )died in an accident
before the game Sporting-Porto on last sunday.
About 80 young Sporting supporters of the official fan
club called JUVE LEO falled from a high of 10 meters .
This accident happened when the Porto team was arriving at the stadium.
The stand where they were collapsed because the all run at the same
time...One died immediatly , other died yesterday at 00.30 and one
other is in coma. There are more 3 in very critical state.
Even with this terrible accident , the game took place ...
I think that we must stop and think.
Is a football game more important than a human life ?

He plays for Reggiana, who have just been relegated from the Italian
first (premier) division. I would think he's about 30 now, but he's
still highly-rated (I know that Sampdoria have made a bid for him)
despite suffering a serious injury at the beginning of last season.

Does anyone know who Benfica, Porto and Lisbon have bought so far for
    the coming season?

Does anyone also know who the emerging stars are from the current
    national under 21 squad?

I have read that Pedro Barbosa and Jose Barroso have been the best
players this season, is this true?

| | Hi All,

I normally hang out at the Dutch league, but since I live
in Canada, and I believe we have a player in the Portugese
league, I thought I'd make an entry. I'm looking for info
on the Canadian player (Bunbury i think) what team
he's on, how he's doing etc.

    Cheers,

    Rob
