| | Anyone any tips on adjusting brakes? I have adjusted the brakes on my
Cruiser (with ALKO chassis) twice and have not been completely happy
with the results. The first time I think I had them too tight and they
seems to bite very quickly and very hard, grat for stopping but not so
good on tyres and brake pads, and the second time I ended up with the
drivers side brake kicking in before the passenger side.
With the amount of miles we do, much of which is along Scottish back
roads I needed to adjust them twice last year and don't particularly
want to pay a shop to do it every six months!
The adjustment is the standard "star" shaped adjuster turned though
the access hole. I follow the procedure of tightening up until
resistance is felt when turning the wheel by hand and then slackening
off. The problem I seem to have is determining when they start
touching. It seems to be a bit of a black art to me at the moment.

You are following the correct proccedure. I always turn the star until
the wheel locks then pull the handbrake on, this seems to center the
pads on the drum, then slack off the star untill the wheel spins
freely. Have you checked the cable that joins the two sets of brakes?
If the main cable that pulls it in the middle is sticking because of
muck or no grease you will get one brake on befor the other. If in
doubt strip them down and check out pads, drums, bearings, etc.

| | Thanks Guy,
I'll try your method. I plan a big overhaul of the brakes and bearings this
weekend. If fact I've just come back from Halfords after buying a new pot of
grease and a neumatic jack. I fed up of winding up my old mechanical one!
Any other comments much appreciated.
Rgds, Steve.

Well I stripped the wheels down before last weekend's jaunt and found
that on one side the tension spring between the two shoes had snapped
and consequently although the brakes could be put on no problem they
where not being pulled off after use.
The break in the spring looked to be recent as the fracture was clean
and I guess it happened at Easter when I first noticed the uneveness
of the brakes. The grease was slightly darker that side but it did not
look to have got too hot. Fortunately the local dealer had a very
similar spring in stock which worked fine last weekend and the correct
spring should be in this week which I will fit this weekend.
Moral of the story of course get your brakes checks regularly!

| 88.20 | Finally..... | IRNBRU::61549::Spike | Welcome to the Rimmer Experience | Wed May 14 1997 15:48 | 26 |
| | I am now the world's greatest brakes adjuster! After several weekends
and 4 nights lying under the camper I can honestly say I know the
brakes on a very intermit basis.
The problem I had was that I could get the brakes to work fine when
moving but the handbrake would not fully lock the wheels. I assumed
incorrectly that the problem was the position of the brake shoes and
their closeness to the drum. I must have adjusted them 10 times and
always ended up with the same result. Finally I went back and read the
manual again this time all the way to the end of the chapter. (Yes I
know I should have read it all the first time)
The last instruction is to check that there is no clearance between
the friction plate on the overrun device and the level on the brake
rod. The way to test this is to pull the handbrake level up to the
second notch on the ratchet and in this position the brakes should
just start to rub. When I checked this I found that the brake rod had
not been pulled at all on the second notch. In the end I needed to
adjust the nut on the brake rod by 10 flats to alleviate the gap.
The handbrake is now working perfectly and the delay there used to be
in the brakes coming on when on the move has disappeared. It was a
frustrating experience but boy am I good at adjusting brakes now!!
  Rgds, Steve.
