1.
The Digital Application Generator evaluation kit is now available
from our world-wide web page! This new evaluation kit contains
the new OLE Server generation features for client development,
along with a new and improved "Getting Started" on-line guide.
We've added a wizard to help you set up your development environment,
so you can now get started building applications faster than ever.
You can copy the new evaluation kit from:
http://www.digital.com/application-generator
This evaluation kit requires no license, and can be made available
to your prospective customers at no charge.
This is a excellent opportunity to help your customers quickly
design and deploy multi-tier Affinity and AllConnect applications.
The Digital Application Generator has been tailor made to easily and
quickly generate the high-availability 3-tier client/server applications your
customers are requesting. With one application design, the application
can be generated for easy-to-deploy ODBC database connections,
for better network performance with OLE Servers, for Transaction
Processing to provide the ultimate in application and data availability.

3. Digital/BEA agreement
Below is a press release regarding an agreement between Digital
and BEA with regard to ObjectBroker and DECMessageQ. A scripted
PowerPoint V4 presentation which can be used with customers has
been posted to:
TLE::DECBEA.PPT
The basic message for customers in the OpenVMS/Windows-NT space
seems to be that our strategy there is unchanged. Digital will
continue to invest in technologies to enhance OpenVMS/Windows-NT
affinity and the related TP products including ACMSxp and Digital
Application Generator.
DIGITAL and BEA Systems Extend Partnership
DIGITAL and BEA Systems are announcing a strategic technology and
distribution partnership, designed to provide the first industry-standard,
UNIX-centric universal middleware infrastructure. For customers, this
integrated infrastructure will simplify the development and deployment
of distributed, heterogeneous, business-critical solutions.
Customers will continue to demand better integration in
middleware to reduce the complexity in their heterogeneous (especially
mixed NT/UNIX) application environments. It is clear that next
generation enterprise applications (both 3-tier and Intranet) in
heterogeneous environments will require what Gartner describes as "OTM"
(Open Transaction Middleware).
THE AGREEMENT:
The key elements of this partnership:
* Digital takes a significant equity position in BEA Systems
* Digital invests in direct engineering at BEA, to ensure that Digital
customer commitments continue to be met
* BEA takes on product development for ObjectBroker and DECmessageQ
* Digital continues to focus on developing underlying distributed
systems services, such as DCE, and on building best-in-class
interoperability with Microsoft
* Both companies collaborate on joint middleware development, long
term product direction, joint marketing, promotion, and sales
collaboration
* Digital will continue to make strategic investments in engineering
middleware products including our DCE, ACMS, RTR, CICS and other
middleware components and the tools that support them.
DIGITAL'S STRATEGY
Our strategy is to deliver the next-generation OTM-style middleware
solution set to the marketplace, in development partnership with BEA.
BEA's focus is on developing/integrating the OTM components.
DIGITAL's focus will be on differentiation of this solution set
on our platforms (e.g., 64-bit support, clustering, performance, etc.),
and on integrating this UNIX-centric solution with the Microsoft
ActiveServer equivalents, to support customers in heterogeneous
environments.
DIGITAL's middleware strategy is differentiated by:
* using open, industry leading TP & Database partners
* optimized for our platforms
* best-in-class Microsoft interoperability
* leadership distributed computing services, as DCE
BEA compliments DIGITAL via:
* OTM-oriented direction
* complimentary product set with ours
* strong marketing, sales, technical support having middleware
expertise
* leading marketshare & credibility in the open TP market

1. Digital Application Generator V3.0B for VB Development was
submitted to manufacturing on 28-April-1997!
This version contains updates to support deployment of applications
onto Digital UNIX platforms. This release culminates an extensive
project to port the powerful functionality of DECADMIRE from OpenVMS
onto the PC, enabling developers to design applications independent
of their final server-platform destination.
From one single design using the Digital Application Generator, the
developer can deploy fully functional 3-tier client/server applications
to Windows NT, OpenVMS, and Digital UNIX platforms. This capability
makes the Application Generator an important tool for integrating OpenVMS
applications with new Windows NT and Digital UNIX deployments --
consistent with the OpenVMS/Windows NT Affinity program and then Digital
UNIX/Windows NT AllConnect program.
Congratulations to the entire Digital Application Generator
engineering team for their hard work in completing this release!

There is no customer activity in our old DECADMIRE V1/Hebrew or
DECADMIRE V2/Japanese releases. It is our plan to begin the retirement
process for these product versions. Customers should migrate to
Digital Application Generator V3.0 if they desire to develop Visual
Basic/PC client solutions, or DECADMIRE V2.1 if they desire to develop
DECforms/VT client solutions.
