| I had a similar problem. My solution was to delete most of the devices.
I first deleted all of the sound stuff, and the Cdrom. powered of and
removed the CD dock. Next I deleted the modem and network controler.
Powered off and removed them. Again I booted back up removed the comm
devices. This time before rebooting from the bios setup I made sure the
IR port was disabled. I then rebooted and made sure the com device
came up properly. I then added the modem rebooted and then network
card and again rebooted. I then made sure the network and modem worked
properly. I then added the CD dock and powered on the system. The
system then rediscovered the Audio card and CDrom put them in the right
place. This worked because I had already installed AGP8W95A.exe It
had just assigned the wrong IRQ's. This procedure was sucessfull. I
was able after the fact to move the modem to an available IRQ and
reenable the IR port.

| A couple things I want to discuss. First I thought that this patch
was to fix Conflicts between the CDROM AND COM1. After installing it
on several other laptops I didnt have any problems.
It seems as though the problems we are experiencing here are conflicts
between the CDrom and the MODEM. It seems as if this patch is causing
problems on the Hinotes with active matrix displays(1 adjustment)
as opposed to other type (2 adjustments).

| The patch fixes several bugs with what are the allowed IRQ's and
preffered IRQ's for the multimedia dock. I have a active matrix
display I have used the procedure mentioned in 495.1 and it has worked
for me. The other multistep procedures assume to much and frequently do
not work.

| Mike,
I'm also using the hinote ultra with the active display, and the patch
worked fine. This is what I did, make sure com1 was enabled, IR
disabled, removed the cd-rom and sound from device manger. I left my
modem and network adapter in and rebooted. My modem is now at com2
IRQ3, com1 available, network adapter at IRQ15, cd-rom at IRQ11, pcmcia
audio at IRQ10, ESS ES1448 driver at IRQ5. I have seen problems with
the TDK network adapter causing IRQ conflicts in this configuration.

| I followed a procedure for 4 laptops with no problems.I have tried
various plans undock CDROM leave it docked.Everytime with the last 2
active matrixes laptops I had the identical problem. The CDROM and
PCMCIA Modem card are conflicting at IRQ3. The procedure you describe
is pretty much the procedure I used.

| Mike,
Can you post the type of modem you are using and post what device
manager is reporting for your IRQ's? Also have you tried removing the
modem and network adapters, enabling com1 and com2(IR), then see where
the cd-rom is configured at? It should not configure itself at IRQ3
or IRQ4. Is this one of the WOW laptops?

| In my experience working on Micron PCs, they have given me a tip that
seems to work pretty well: before installing any updates, restart the
computer in 'safe mode' (assuming you are running W95). This gives you
a running system, but there are no drivers loaded that are apt to use
any interrupts or addresses that might cause a problem when you attempt
the update. Another thing you can do is do call up Control
Panel/System/Device Manager (you are still in 'safe mode', remember),
remove all the devices (or at least the problem ones). Then, do a
shutdown/restart, and W95 should find the devices and load up the
appropriate drivers automagically! Works pretty well, most of the time.
Speaking of laptops, I've had some weird things happen (intermittently,
now and again) that I find very disturbing. Once, I had the thing
connected to the AC, but the next morning, the battery was at 0
capacity! A couple of times, I hear a little 'thump', 'thump' about
once a minute, and when I lift the lid, the thing had turned itself on!
Other than that, it works pretty good most of the time...

| As far as turning itself on, check your setup for Lid Switch. It's
probably set for Suspend / Resume, which would allow the PC to turn on
if the micro switch in the lid is on the fringe of making/breaking.
We've heard of this being the case in a few notebooks. Try setting the
Lid Switch to Suspend Only. That way, it suspends when closed, but
requires the power switch be pressed to resume.
