When this was explained to me, I was told that, quite some time ago,
"they" used to say "great" instead of "upper-case" or "capital". So,
the capital B in the puzzle comes out as "great B" which is homonymed
to be "grate be"; i.e.
If the B mt == If the grate be empty
The colon (:) comes out as "coal on".
The period (.) is also known as a full stop.
A fender ("a hyphen der") is defined as "a low metal guard before an
open fireplace [or in a coal stove, I guess] to keep back falling
coals."
