I know this isn't the place to ask this...(I also posted it in
FOO::TRIVIA), but there are a lot of intelligent people in this
conference that might be able to help me........
Here's the question:
Does anyone know the significance/purpose of Jordan almonds
at a bridal shower? (as favors)
(this isn't a quiz....I really don't know the answer, but I'm hoping
someone else does :^)
Thanks in advance...

Symbolism for impending bliss? See, across the Jordan was the land flowing with milk and honey. And nuts? | |||||

I've never heard of this custom. Where was the wedding held?
Rice is often thrown as a symbol of fertility. However a few
local weddings have used bird seed so that it is quickly eaten
by wild birds (the fact that a few infants have been born with
beaks can be just called coincidence).
Perhaps there is a more prosaic explanation for Jordan almonds.
For example, was one of the couple's parents or cousins in the
wholesale food business and happened to have some left over?

It's not a wedding custom. At a lot of bridal showers, party favors
are given out (such as potpourri in tiny baskets, or Jordan almonds
in a little "pouch" made of netting...). Jordan almonds (for those
not familiar with them), are almonds with a brightly colored candy
coating.
There is some symbolic reason for it, but I can't, for the life
of me, remember what it is. My wife is matron of honor for an
approaching wedding, and the bride-to-be jokingly said she _had_
to have Jordan almonds, but only if my wife found out what they
meant. I haven't had much luck finding it in any etiquette books,
or in any books dealing with wedding customs. Maybe there _is_ no
reason for it. But, hey, if there isn't a reason, why spend all
that money on fancy nuts. I would just give M&M's, but that's the
kind o' classy guy I is. :^)
Thanks.
