Thanks for that word. Until now, I've referred to them as the
"things that you use tape on until we have a chance to get to the
store and get a new pair".
Re: .1 Bonnie, if they are around your house, then you must be
the old lady that lived in a shoe.... :-)

| I always believed that they were called "ferrules" since they serve
a similar purpose to the ferrules used on tool handles to keep the
wood from splitting.

| And I thought ferrules were the metal reinforcements to the holes
in the leather/canvas/plastic/whatever of the shoes that you poke
those laces through, with extreme annoyance when those aglets are
worn out !

Those are grommets.

| Maybe ....
A grommet lines a hole to prevent damage inflicted by the hole
on the the thing going through the it.
A ferrule on the other hand reinforces the thing it is attached
to. In this case it reinforces the hole to prevent damage
to the hole from the thing going through it.
So these things in shoes seem to perform both functions...
Are they therefore
ferruling grommets
or
grommeting ferrules
?
