I am looking for some info on Russian to English translation
of phrases and common words like "good morning", "goodbye", etc...
I am currently involved getting two related families established on the
south shore, and a third contingent of their family has just
made it to the area. The new emigres speak no English at all,
thus everything has to be translated.
I am aware that my learning Russian will not help them, and for them
to assimilate into our society, they must learn english.
Can anyone suggest an inexpensive book or a notes file that might be
easy to access. I feel that my making the effort will show them our
commitment.
thanks in advance,
Ron

Ron,
There are Russian book stores that have Russian-English dictionaries,
text books,..etc. There are educational tapes for English as a Second
Language. All of the above are not going to be helpfull enough for
a professional whose goal is to learn english quickly and get a job.
I speak Russian and will be glad to answer your questions.
Irina.

Most Russian language books would be available thru college bookstores
and in specialized Russian language bookstores located predominantely
in New York and San Francisco. You may want to ask for a common phrase
book - "razgovornik." It may be helpfull in getting started. If you
want, I can get for you the names and addresses of Russian language
stores (they do mail order.) If you need translations of any
particular phrase, I am sure that you will find many of us, former
Soviets willing and able to help. Jake
