844.0. "A Gay Synagogue Bids for Acceptance" by WAV12::STEINHART () Mon Dec 04 1989 17:37
    Interesting situation in Atlanta - I heard from a rabbi there.
    A group of synagogues of all branches formed a council. A synagogue
    serving gays and lesbians tried to join. At first, they were
    disqualified by not having a rabbi. They have found one and applied
    again. The council is split over acceptance. The dispute centers
    over the synagogue's letterhead which states (I paraphrase) "A Gay
    and Lesbian Synagogue."

    Now a compromise has been suggested; change the letterhead to "A
    Synagogue Serving the Gay and Lesbian Community", as used elsewhere
    in the country. This positions their sexual preferences as a private
    matter.

    If anyone follows this, I'd like news after I return North. The
    ramification: if no agreement is reached, it will probably split
    the council, making it ineffective.
