Conference taveng::bagels

    There is a network called Keshernet that has BBS nodes in the US and
    Israel.  A number of its services (such as Shlomo Riskin's Divrei
    Torah) get redistributed on Usenet.  If I have time today I can get you
    a New York telephone number where you can get [voice] information.  I
    don't know any more about it than what I wrote in this reply.

Thanks. Actually, maybe someone can tell me about the origin of BAGELS
itself (Gvriel?), as well as soc.culture.jewish. Any related information

In addition to bulletin board type systems (including notes and usenet) there
are 2 mailing lists that I know of.  1 is mail.jewish, which I cross-post in
75.* of this conference.  The other is the judaic studies newsletter.

soc.culture.jewish came into existence with the reorganization of the usenet
newgroups.  Previous to that there was net.jewish.  I believe that mail.jewish
came into existence because the observant participants of net.jewish had to
spend all their time justifying halachic Judaism instead of discussing it.
Talk.politics.mideast came into existence fairly recently to remove the
political flames from s.c.j.

Some information about the formation of BAGELS can be gleaned from the
early notes.  It was created (in the old NOTES format which predated
VAXNOTES) by Mike Mahler.  He was working for CADSE at the time.  By his
own statements, Mike was trying to get more information about Jewish life
in New England; in particular where to find a decent bagel.  I have been
led to believe that an additional motive was to meet girls.

Through his various transfers, Mike dragged BAGELS around to several
different locations.  About 2 years ago he left DEC for Stratus and dumped
BAGELS in my lap.

I guess I am not at all familiar with other news groups or how to access 
their files.  I went into both Notesfiles and was amazed at the plethora of 
information available.  I did searches on jewish news groups.  I did not 
gather enough information to actually access the files.

Can someone get real specific and write the actual commands to be used from 
a VMS based system?

    News-backbone does explain how to access USENET.  Follow the
    instructions.  Once you can access USENET, type (assuming VMS vnews),
    
    	g soc.culture.jewish
    

As Sam mentioned, you can use the command g <newsgroup-name> to read a
specific newsgroup once you are running vnews (on vms) or rn (on ultrix).
NEWS-BACKBONE contains information on how to get access to USENET in general.
You should look for the information there about VNEWS (the VMS news reader) or
rn (the UNIX character cell news reader).  You can also find information in that
conference on what news servers are available on the easynet so that you can
make a choice about which one is easiest for you to access.  (From the Mill, I
would suggest using mountn which is administered by Martin Minow).

If you have a DECwindows workstation, you might be interested in using XRN (or
MXRN or DXRN, Motif and XUI variants).  XRN is an X Window System based news
reader.  The conference discussion where you can get and how to run XRN is
UFP::XRN.

Once you get access to the usenet, there are 2 groups which may be of
specifically jewish interest, soc.culture.jewish (for discussion of jewish
topics, excluding Israeli relations with the Arab world) and
talk.politics.mideast (for mideast politics).

In addition to the usenet, there are 2 newsletters which are distributed on the
Internet.  One of them, mail.jewish, is a discussion of halachic matters which
I post here in note 75.*.  You can subscribe to mail.jewish by sending mail to
Avi Feldblum at DECWRL::"[email protected]".  The other newletter is the Judaic

I am to much of a novice to understand what to do first.  I have done a 
search of NEWS-BACKBONE.  I have read the notes.

Can someone tell me, in simple terms, what to do at the $ prompt on VMS?

If you have, have you added VNEWS setup to your LOGIN.COM?

If you have, have you edited the VNEWS.COM file to set up your site, domain...?

If you have, type VNEWS at the DCL prompt.

    I've recently heard of a public network called "The Well", which
    also carries a Jewish conference. Has anyone else heard of this before?

    The Well is a public access Unix system which carries the same USENET
    groups we get.  They may have some private news groups as well but I'm
    not sure.  They charge a fee.  They should be reachable via the
    Internet but I don't recall their address offhand.  It is based in
    California, I think in San Francisco.

    I'm not sure what you mean by this. Someone briefly logged in to
    the Jewish conference for me, and it didn't look anything like
    soc.culture.jewish. It was archived, not unlike VAXnotes. The
    postings I saw looked even wilder than s.c.j, if that's possible :^).

    Well, I just recalled seeing postings on various news groups which
    originated from well.uucp.  I guess they do have their own conferences.
    
    If I remember correctly, they are/were associated with the folks who
    did the Whole Earth Catalog series.

Announcing the Sefarad Newsletter

The word "Sefardic" refers to Jews whose origin is from Spain.

Until the last expulsion of Jews, which occurred in 1492, the center
of the Jewish world was located in Spain.  Afterwards, the Spanish
Jews dispersed mostly to North Africa, and the Ottoman Empire.
However, they also later made their way to Holland, England and other
parts of Europe.  By the 17th century they had reached the Americas.

As a result of Inquisitions in the Iberian Peninsula and in the
Americas, where Jews were forbidden to reside unless they converted to
Catholicism, many chose to become Crypto-Jews, outwardly appearing
Catholic while privately practicing aspects of Judaism.  Thus, today,
millions in the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world have Jewish
roots.

This Judeo-Spanish culture, both that of those who remained Jewish and
those who assimilated into the surrounding non-Jewish population, is
the subject of this newsletter.

Sefaradic Jews are today found in the Americas, Western and Eastern
Europe, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and North Africa, and even in other
remote African countries such as Zaire, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

This newsletter will come out once a month (conditions permitting).

Do not specify a Subject: line in the message, and do not include any
other lines (e.g. do not include your signature).  Specify your real
name, not your computer address.

    I'm copying Gav's instructions for subscription to CJ-L
    here. The technique is the same, but the names change in
    each case (to protect no one in particular :)
    
    For those unfamiliar with external mailing lists, you should send to:
    
    DECWRL::"[email protected]"
    
    Pay attention to capitalization of the destination.  You may need to
    use NMAIL
    to get out through DECWRL.  To do this try putting NM% before DECWRL. 
    If NMAIL
    is installed you are all set.  If not, mail will tell you it couldn't
    find
    some shareable image.
    
    If you are on a cluster multiple boot nodes, NMAIL and no cluster
    alias, you may
    have some problems posting notes to the list server.  As a members only
    list,
    it requires you to send from the same address as you used for your
    registration.
    Since NMAIL could send through any of the boot nodes, your mail may be
    rejected.
