My wife , who is Catholic, and I attended a weekend workshop called
Marriage Encounter recentely. It was started and given by the Catholic
church and its intent is to get couples closer and communicating better by
helping them focus in on feelings. The major component is a daily
structured period called Dialogueing where the couple uses specific tools
to accomplish this.
I understand that the program is now spreading to both Protestant and
Jewish adhearents. The basic program stays the same only the religious
aspect would change to that particular belief.
I'm interested in knowing if any of you have attended the Jewish
version and, if so, how they approached the spiritual piece of it.
Thanks,
David

Paul and I went, last January ('88). It was over Martin Luther King Day
weekend, since of course it could not start until after sunset on
Saturday (not that we get Martin Luther King Day off around here
anyhow, but some people do), down in or near Rhode Island someplace (I
forget exactly where; anyhow, we drove there during a torrential
rainstorm and were lucky to locate the hotel). It started with a
havdalah service and dinner, and one of the organizers was a rabbi (I
think he is a Conservative rabbi, but I'm not sure). A lot of the
discussion centered on how a Jewish home works, and a lot of the
attendees were more observant than we are (I am not sure if the food was
certified kosher, but there definitely were no ingredients or mixtures
of ingredients that were out-and-out treif). It was a very nice
experience (especially sitting around the tables after meals singing
the blessing after meals - we usually don't do this except at formal
occasions). A lot of couples from our schul have attended at one time
or another. The experience certainly reminded me how lucky I am to
have Paul around...!
We haven't kept up the notebooks you write - I think most people don't,
actually.

I don't have the contact phone number, but I imagine you can get it
from our schul, since so many people have gone. Congregation B'nai
Shalom (Westboro, MA), phone (508)366-7191.
