    Right across the street from the Butcherie is Schaffran's.  A small
    butcher, just selling meats.  Their veal is especially good.  All
    meat is soaked and salted unless otherwise indicated.
    
    My favorite is Star Kosher Meats (no relation to Star Market) on
    Beacon Street in Newton.  (It's right near a Delitizer -- not strictly
    Kosher.)  They have a good assortment of meats and barbecued chicken,
    frozen foods, and some hard to find kosher items.  My personal opinion
    is that they're the best butcher around.  All meat soaked and salted
    unless otherwise indicated.
    
    I hear there's a kosher butcher in Worcester, anyone ever hear of
    it?

    The Butcherie had opened a store in Worcester which did include
    a butcher shop (they also had frozen glatt kosher meat), which was,
    I think, on Pleasant Street.  We went there to do our Pesach shopping
    last spring, and it was very nice, and much less of a panic then
    going in to Harvard St.  Someone recently told me that it has either
    closed down or moved, though.  Maybe one of our Shrewsbury noters
    can say for sure.  At any rate, the only thing they did not have
    were kosher wines (no liquor license), which was sort of a nuisance.
    I haven't been by there in some time now myself.

    The Butcherie in Worcester is closed. The owner was a little too
    ambitious. A few years ago B. Cohen, the local kosher butcher
    retired. The Butcherie took his place, but his mistake was opening
    a small supermarket. On Worcester's West End most all the super
    markets carry packaged kosher goods and for a lot cheaper than the
    Butcherie. If they sold meat and a few specialty items, as Cohen
    did they might still be in business. to the best of my knowledge
    there are two partners, from Worcester's Lubovitch community
    looking for a good location for a kosher butcher shop. 
    
    Most of us in Worcester go to Springfield for kosher meat. It's
    further than Brookline, but a fraction of the Butcherie's prices.
    There is also someone from the community that will take orders and
    make deliveries for those who cannot travel. 
    
    

    I go to Hurwitz, in Framingham, for kosher meat, but that is basically
    all they sell there.  There used to be TWO kosher butchers in Worcester
    at one time; one of them was Cohen (the retiree) but I forget who
    the other was.
    
    Oh, Hurwitz does not carry glatt kosher foods (that I know of).

    Since the Butcherie closed in Worcester many of us in Central
    Mass. travel to Boston for kosher meat. The stores there are fine,
    however, their prices are outrageous! As an alternative here are
    directions to two kosher butchers within traveling distance from
    the Worcester area. I've heard people say their prices are almost
    as cheap as trafe. I don't know that for sure but their prices are
    considerably less than the Butcherie in Brookline. 
    
    Abe's in Springfield - small butcher 
    
    From Worcester. Take Mass. Turnpike West to Rt. 91. Take Rt. 91 to
    Rt. 83 Forest Park exit. Follow Rt. 83 (it becomes Summer Avenue).
    Abe's is 970(?) Summer Avenue. 

    Crown Market in Hartford is a small super market.
    
    From Worcester. Take Mass. Turnpike West to Rt. 84. Exit at South
    Main Street in Hartford. Follow South Main all the way to Albany
    Street. Turn right at Albany Street. Go one block and Crown will
    be on your right.

A slight misstatement here.  Shafran's poultry is kashered, as is any
frozen meat and ground meat.  Chops, roasts, steaks, etc. are not.  In
my humble opinion it is worth soaking and salting yourself.  Shafran's
meats are so much better than the Butcherie!

    But then if you want the best in kosher "continental-style" wurst
    products, you should buy the BLOCH & FALK brand which is sold at
    the Butcherie.
    
    I may be a little prejudiced since BLOCH & FALK is the brand of
    my in-law's company.  They're located in New York on 173rd and Broadway
    (Washington Heights), and there is a branch store in Forest Hills.
    
    By the way our frankfurters make Hebrew National's taste inferior.
    But I don't think we're selling them up here yet.

    There will be a meeting to discuss how to bring a Kosher butcher
    to Worcester.  It will be held on Thursday, December 8th, 8pm at
    the Jewish Home for the Aged, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA.
    
    According to a flyer from Beth Israel, a small group of Jewish leaders
    and lay people met informally a few weeks ago on ways to strengthen
    the awareness and observance of Kashrut in the community.  This
    meeting is one result.  All are welcome.
    

Shalom David,

Until recently, The Butcherie has carried only the liverwurst from Bloch and
Falk.  Last Sunday, while doing our holiday marketing, I noticed that they
had a large selection of Bloch and Falk wursts.  I must agree, their products
are excellent.

    Your remarks on our business and the Butcherie have made my day!!
    Bloch and Falk is now being run exclusively by my mother-in-law
    since the passing my father-in-law, Alfred Bloch.  It's been a
    tremendous burden on her, particularly during the pre-holiday rush,
    which is gehanom for kosher butchers (average 15 hour days), and
    especially during our shnat evel (mourning year) when she is quite
    depressed as can be expected.
