I agree, Ireland is (or was) 2nd to Italy for car and gas prices in the
EU. I haven;t been there in almost 12 months, but not looking forward
to the costs in June. I keep hearing that its cheaper to book from US
rather than waiting, but I can't see how that works with DEC rates,
unless omeone can get an "all in " deal, which doesn;t suit me as I
stay with family.
On the non international car hires (ie not Avis, Hertz, Budget) they
are a bit cheaper, but then you can't decide to drop the car off where
it suits you and that can be inconvenient.
I always use my Credit Card to cover all insurances, so that saves a
few punts per day. It still ends up being at least 40 punts per day.

I think you will do OK on car rental if you book from the US, at least
if Ireland follows the British example. I book via compuserve and
get rates of 12 quid a day, versus 20-30 in situ. That's from Alamo,
Eurodollar and so forth.

.....12 quid a day sounds very good...paradise in fact...However I
doubt if that applies to Ireland. In fact you wouldn't even get a 3
legged donkey for that -) -)....well maybe in clare -)
Yes Car hire is a killer here..Certainly for all the tourist push that
we do its one area that is obviously overtly expensive.
that said I know a couple of AVIS cars were actually used in a donegal
rally competition a while ago so They do hype up the insurance costs

| It's difficult to complain too much, when you pay a mere 12-15 pounds
for a room at a B&B. Try doing that in any other place in Europe.
I suppose the rates are low, because there are so many who do B&B
in Ireland?
Even so, the car rates are a killer. If there were better public
transport, it wouldn't be such a problem. But realistically, there's
no way you can do without a car while on holidays in Ireland.

I'm curious so I'll check with Compuserve tonight. They have the same
kind of rates in places like Italy too I seem to remember, which isn't
cheap either.

| Actually, what I should do is buy a second hand car
and store it at my relatives house. Then use that every
time I come over. I'd save money after the first trip.
If I was only staying in Galway City, I could get by
with a donkey and a bag of feed. Wasn't it keVin that
did this in Doolin?

last year when I went I paid about $280 per week. I find it
difficult to believe you can rent a car in Eire for $130.

I made many rentals in 1992. The best rate was IR�28 per day avg. on a
monthly voucher. I really hope Chris is right. That's a terrific
rate.

All I can tell you is, it's there in black and white on Compuserve.
It's far cheaper if you book from here, as I say. As for what kind
of car, I believe Alamo will give you a Corsa. At least that's what I
get through them and I always get the cheapest they have. It's small
but it'll get you around. If you pay via Amex you can decline the CDW
too or they'll hit you for $7 or $8 a day.

Maybe 130 punts per week; but even that sounds too good. I was over 30
punts per day without any "insurances" last year. That would be almost
$300 per week.
If I get it at $130 per week I won't complain.

Right, why should you start to doubt me now. Like you never did
before, right Gary? And yes the rate is for Mar 21 for 7 days unlimited
mileage. Bound to be more in summer, but then I never go to Europe in
the summer. Too nice on Cape Ann then.
It always comes as a surprise to find how low they will go if you
book from here. I've tried to get equivalent rates in situ but you never
can get the same kinds of deals. Must be reserved for Americans huh?

The current rates are this: IR�98 + 12.5% VAT = IR�110.25 a week
If you need collision add IR�8 per day extra. To wave collision
they require IR�500 cash deposit up front. (also you should check
with U.S. car insurance company or see if your major credit card
will cover your driving abroad)
June 1st, higher seasonal rates will be in effect.

So what's that in dollars? By the way, did you mention you saw a rate
quoted on Cserve? You have to you know. You're dealing with salespeople.
There is no standard rate they quote.

| What can I say, looks good ( I think in $$$ = $140 for a week).
My trip is late May early June, I'll call them tonite and see what the
rate will be. I think Thomas Cook quoted abour $250 - DEC rate, so I
did not reserve at that time.

It sems to work this way. (1) They only fix their rates a month or so
in advance so you can't get a compuserve-listed rate now for say
August, or if you do it'll cost you more. (2) As I said before, they
are salespeople. If you don't mention a rock bottom deal you saw,
they won't mention it either! I have always had Alamo and also
Eurodollar honor the Cserve-published rate, in England and in Italy.
I can't see why Ireland should be any different.

I rent from Hamill's, and Ireland-based company. I get a group 4
(Nissan Primera) for #183/week, either on or off season (that's
a deal they cut for me; normally the on-season rate would be higher).
#183/week at the prevailing exchange rate of about $1.43/# works
out to about $262/week. Of course, then there's tax on top of
that (12.5% I believe, making it about $295/week.)

| For a group 4 car, the Alamo cost was ~$290 + 12.5% tax.
The Hamill's cost was #183 + 12.5% tax. At the going rate
of about $1.43/#, that makes Hamill's pre-tax price ~$262.
Renting from Hamill's will save you about $31/week. (And,
depending on what Alamo calls a "group 4" car, might get
you a better car).
