    			UNITED STATES EMBASSY STATEMENT

WORLD CUP 94 - VISA ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

"Following your countries recent run of football results, and your now
almost certain qualification for next year's 'World Soccer Thingy' the
US Embassy would like to facilitate (barely restrained laughter) those
intending to invade our beautiful country by advising them of the
    following visa application requirements:

    * Preference will be given to applicants who are in "secure
employment". Those falling into this category include:

    		- Barristers and other [beef] tribunal staff
    		- The executive Chairman of Aer Lingus
    		- Those involved in the mugging of foreign tourists

    NOT INCLUDED ARE:

    		- PAYE workers
    		- Current Labour TD's on the Northside of Dublin
    		- Working stiffs generally

    * Applicants with relatives currently residing in the US should submit
their relatives names and addresses, along with details of their income
tax submissions for the past five years. This is purely for
administrative purposes and will definately not be used to rid our
glorious United States of some freeloading good-for-nothing, to-bit
      damn foreigners, no siree.

    * Applicants who wish to submit letters of reference from their local
TD or clergyman may do so. These references will be given due
consideration and will greatly reduce the Embassy's toilet paper budget
      for 1994.

    * Fans arriving in the US with a tatty sleeping bag under their arms
and a copy of 'America on 50 cents a day' are likely to be refused
entry. Other banned items include intact photos of Sinead O'Connor, and
firearms below a certain minimum caliber.

    * Finally, a limited number of special visas will be available to those
not meeting our normal criteria. These include:

      		- Saxaphone enthusiasts
    		- Presidential half-brothers
    		- Non-inhalers generally
    		- And anyone else Hilary can think of

    Therese,

....your talking about gold dust there....best chance is if you book
through a travel agency with packages going to WC.

Then again I reckon you have a better chance nearer the games themselves..

    rgs,

    Mick

Well the show is about to begin so if you have any
opinions/predictions/comments in general regarding the WC,
    chip them in here.

Big Match prediction : Ireland 0 Italy 0
    Surprise packet : Nigeria
Worst referee decision : That South American ref with the glasses.
Strangest haircut : Valderama (Colombia) probably.
Biggest loss : Eammon Dunphy off the RTE panel.

should be good one..everybody looking forward to it. Think Italy will
probably beat us 2-0 but we should do the business with Norway and
    Mexico.

Hope to see gary kelly play some of the games..or at least part of
    them. very very fast player.

Anybody have any info on the McAteer who played for Ireland?

My great-grandmother was a McAteer from Cushendall in Co. Antrim.
    Maybe he's a cousin. ;-)

This made the news in Australia! It was devoted more air-time than the
match. It must be an indication of how much Irish people are perceived
    to like their beer.

    Tony.

P.S. The pubs were open here, even for the 5:30AM kick-off !

Jason McAteer plays for Bolton Wanderers (but probably not for much longer)
    in the English 1st Division.
He comes from Birkenhead which is just across the Mersey from
Liverpool. His uncle was a European champion boxer.Incidently he also
qualifies to play for N.Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. Clever
    lad declaring for the Republic.

His N Ireland connection could be worth exploring.

    A truly great prospect.
