| | The Rose of Tralee is a week long festival, the highlight being the
pagent to select of "The Rose of Tralee". It's held at the end of
August and the craic in Tralee is meant to be good. I have never been
there for the festival, so I can't comment on that.

| | Selecting "The Rose" is basically a glorified beauty contest with a
slight twist, the girls have to 'do' something instead of just
strutting around in their swimming gear. This usually involves
singing a song, telling a joke, playing a musical instrument or
    reciting a poem. <personal_opinion ON> It's pathetic to look at, it's a
joke. <personal_opinion off>. The show gets quite a bit of TV coverage
so a lot of people must like it but it's not for me. The winner of the
contest is crowned 'The Rose' !

Geesh, I thought it was what someone from Listowel dropped when in
    Tralee.

| | The Rose of Tralee festival takes place yearly in August in Tralee and
last over a week. It is 'sort of' a beauty contest. The Festival is
about 30 years old, and young women from all over the world come to
participate and represent that city. There is a Boston Rose, who goes
over to Tralee each year; there are particpants from as far away as
Sydney. Last year's winner was from Cork.

The whole thing is based on the song, and there are specific categories
upon which the women are judged. I guess the orignal Mary, of the song
    had these qualities.

The festival has a lot of entertainment, and parades everynight. I
have heard it refered to as the 'Festival of Kerry'. When I was there,
it felt like taking ALL of the happy hours from labor day, from ALL
OVER Cape Cod, and busing the people into a very small town. You
literally could not move in the streets. And the majority of the
people were teenagers. Drunk but happy teenagers. There were no fights
    or anything like that.

The TV coverage is about as dull as US beauty pageants. And Gay
Byrne(sp?) is the host - or the inquisitioner. (My opinion of him-
    I find him pompous)

| | It is to be remembered that Gay Byrne is Ireland's answer to Johnny
Carson. He has broadcasted TV and Radio since 1961...when Ireland
    got its first TV station.

A certain pomposity is not out of place, as he must be the best known
man in Ireland. He did some programmes in the States that were also
highly regarded, and we know how hard it is to please the Yanks...
