There is no train but you could go into LImerick and get a bus.

Your best bet is a taxi (I think about IR25), or hire a car.

| | $1.70 buys you IR1.00.
        That taxi fare becomes $81.60.!!!
Shannon to Galway is approx 50 miles.
Public transport outside of the main urban areas is a big problem.
You are strongly advised to hire a car unless you plan to remain close
        to :-
Galway,Limerick,Cork,Dublin,Waterford ...which are the large cities
in the republic (around 50,000 people).

Make sure you get your accomodation near a bus-route.
Taxis are dear here,a 6 mile journey cost me 10 one night,$17!!!
Car hire is criminally expensive compared to the states, count on
having to spend around 40.00 ($68.00) per day if you hire a car.

    	Gasoline,known as petrol here,costs around 3.00 a gallon or $4.74
which by U.S standards is also criminally expensive.
Eating out, entertainment, shopping is not too dear.Drinks are more
evenly priced here, you won't get the huge differences between posh
hotels and the neighbourhood taverns that you get in the States.

You can have a good time here if you are not planning to travel
long distances. Please let me know here if you need more details.

| | There's a pretty regular bus service from Shannon via Ennis to Galway.

| | Many thanks for the suggestions.
I"m staying in Galway, so will use the bus from Shannon airport. Is it
advisable to book a seat on these buses, or are they generally quite easy
    to get on?
    Thank you,
    Ali

| | No need to book....but you'll have to change buses once in Ennis.

| | I haven't heard of anyone using the bus to get from Shannon
to Galway since I did it in 1973:-). I certainly didn't try
it again. I think the trick is to arrive at a time when you
are not hanging around Ennis for half the day waiting for a
connection. With that in mind the following buses from
Shannon connect with buses to Galway at Ennis:
    		Mon-Fri Sat Sun
    		09:35 09:35 -
    		  - 11:15 13:35
    		13:15 13:15 16:10
    		17:30 - 17:35
    		19:00 (Fri only) - 18:05

| | I'm considering taking the ferry from Shannon to Tarbert rather than
the drive around Limerick (destination Glengarriff, Co. Cork).

Anyone know of the cost, schedule, etc.?

| | I did this some years back. We just turned up and got on the next
ferry. Can't help about the schedules or prices, but we didn't have to
wait long, and I don't remember it being that expensive.

| | Pat, someone published the Killimer-Tarbert ferry crossings
in this conference some time back. I'll search the file and
    see where they are hiding.
