What was the details of the incendiary devices planted/exploded in the
Republic? Were most in Dublin? Any in Galway? I'm guessing no one
was injured.
My mom noticed a small article in the Boston Herald, so
I was expecting front page news in the Emigrant, but
Liam only mentioned it casually.
Was this a statement by the Loyalist around the Anglo-Irish talks
or a new campaign to weaken southern Irish unity support?
Is Paisley stirring this pot?
What are the relationships between the UFF, UVF and the
Loyalist/Unionists?
I always thought the UVF was connected to the Loyalist party as the IRA
is connected to the Sinn Fein party and the UFF is a more violent
breakaway group similiar to the Dessie Fox breakaway group from the
IRA. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks,
Paul

The following are excerpts from Liam's emigrant newsletter covering the
subject.
The subject appeared to have died down in Ireland.
When I first read the story in Boston I thought it was a much bigger issue.
Any further details?
Cheers,
Paul

...Sunday's headlines concerned the discovery of incendiary devices
in a number of premises in the South and the claim by the UFF
that 50 such devices had been planted....
The holiday spirit is still with us and once again television

- The Ulster Freedom Fighters phoned the BBC on Sunday morning to
claim that 50 incendiary devices had been placed in business
premises in the South. On Saturday evening devices had gone
off in Roches Stores in Dublin and in two Co.Louth pubs. There
was also a fire at the Quinnsworth supermarket in Sligo but the
cause of this has not been established. In none of these cases
was there any significant damage.

- No further incendiary devices were discovered after last
weekend's attacks by the UVF but there were some after shocks
down here. Rhonda Paisley, a DUP councillor in Belfast, said
that the attacks were "perfectly understandable". Michael
Bell, a Labour TD for Louth, took exception to this. In an RTE
radio interview he said that it was people like her "who have
this country the way it is" and that Ms Paisley and others like
her should return to Britain. He denied that he was suggesting
that one million Protestants should go to live in Britain but
that it would be appropriate for those who give their
allegiance to the British Crown to do so. This sort of talk
did not go down at all well with other members of his party and
Dick Spring went to great lengths to distance himself from the
comments. The matter will be raised at the next meeting of the
parliamentary Labour Party in September.

Perfectly understandable considering she is Big Ian's daughter.
Perfectly understandable considering the targets were only Fenian
Taigs south of the Border.
Her comments make the savagery and ruthlessness of the IRA less
difficult to understand.
One consolation us Southerners can draw on is that the UFF,UVF or
whatever will not find any level of support or shelter from the full
force of the security forces if they try to escalate this campaign.
What makes the IRA difficult to eliminate is that a sizeable minority
support them at least to the extent of withholding any info from the
northern cops/army so that can get away with their foul deeds.
The UFF will not find the same silence down here.......
