Question - is this the correct spelling for this town:
Ennistymon
Question - I seem to remember that the Gap of Dunloe is about 12
miles long. Correct or incorrect? Also, how long to cross in one
of those jaunting carts? I remember spending a day riding through
very leisurely on horseback many many years ago, but anyone know
the average time?
Question - How many miles from Valencia Island to Killarney, and
how much time would it take to drive?
I have a friend going across this summer, and just wanted to verify
a few facts. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

Re .0: I walked the gap some years ago from the south side and then
went on to walk around all of Mc Gillicuddy's Reek to come back to my
campsite: it was about 37 km. The gap itself is no longer than 5 or 6
km, I'd say, but it might be 12 miles if you include all of the trip
from Killarney... I seem to remember seeing the jaunting cars waiting
for the tourists just at the gap entrance (in fact they passed us at
dawn coming from the south side to go and pick up the tourists). The
trip they usually do is only the gap itself, so I guess it shouldn't be
more than 2 hours return. I don't remember the length of the drive from
Killarney to Valencia, but I would advise to allow plenty of time, as
the scenery is magnificent (I don't remember if Connor's Pass is on the
way or on the next peninsula, but that's something to see anyway), and
also the road is narrow and full of curves, so you won't be able to
speed.

Conor's Pass is on the next penninsula (the Dingle penninsula) and
it is the secenic route into Dingle. WIth Brandon Mountain right
beside it, it is a magnificent area for the hiker. Some years back
keVin Burns and his companion Mulligan walked all the way from Dingle
to Brandon, taking the mountain in on route - they murdered the
pints on reaching Brandon. I also believe that the rarely sighted
Mr. Topaz wandered these regions in his youth.

I can't answer the first part of your question (maybe a detailed map would help you work that out) - but from driving from Killarney to Valentia Island back in Sept. '88 I'd recommend not hurrying too much. You'll want to stop every so often to take in the scenery. Also don't be too surprised if you get stuck behind farm tractors along those narrow one-track roads. John | |||||

Re: .0 Your spelling of Ennistymon IS correct. Anyone going there
should make certain to visit "Vaughans" for a pint ...
