Would you consider taking "Culbert" with you and LEAVING him over there.

Come on now that would be inhuman treatment towards Paddy using
    a Pet Carrier........

Besides he'd probably fit under the seat as carry on baggage and
that way wouldn't have to pay extra :^) :^)

| 594.3 | GREENCARD (VISA) - Annual renewal?? | CSG002::ONEILL | Its a LONG way to Tipperary... | Tue Jun 13 1989 12:01 | 24 |

while on the subject of GREEN CARDS - does anyone know the
procedure	or policy of renewing your green card if not resident
    in the USA??

for example - I have a green card - I intend to go to Europe
in a couple of years time, to prevent my green card/visa from Expiring
so that I can come back to USA if I choose - whats the policy???
I have been told that I need to come back to USA annually for different
periods (according to who Im talking to) etc - does anyone know
the correct procedure for renewing ones GREENCARD (Visa) while not
in USA for more than 1 year.

Ive also been told that a COLUMBIAN green card holder who is
back in S. America renews his greencard every year by going to his
    local US Embassy...??

    	Ann

p.s. CONGRATULATIONS Bernard - welcome to the ranks of the
RESIDENT ALIENS!! (You're still an ALIEN B.T.W.!!)

I think these laws change annually. Her best bet is to call the
department of US immigration. Last I knew, you have to enter the
US once a year. The person in Colombia may be passing money under
the table to get a stamp in their passport.

My brother once came into the US after having been away too long.
They gave him a hard time but let him in anyway. It could have
been just a nasty person or it could have been someone giving
him a break. Who knows.

Richard

    Ann ,

First of all as far as I know the yearly "renewal" is just an IRS
requirement , as far as the INS go , you have satisfied the requirements
for permanent residency so you don't have to deal with them anymore .
My impression of the rules when I got my green card was that you either :

    - Need to come back to the states once a year ( I have never heard
of a required minimum length of stay )

    - Need to arrange with the IRS to be absent for an agreed period
of a few years ( say that for career reasons you are going to
      Europe e.t.c )

In both cases you must file Tax returns in the US every year . As
you are a Permanent Resident your worldwide income is Taxable in
the states . However if you pay tax in a country with a reciprocal
tax agreement with the US you need only file ( not pay !! ) .

Almost every country that I can imagine you would want to go to
    has a reciprocal agreement ....

    /Paul

Just to let ye all know. I got back into Boston about 9:15 last night.
Plane was 3 hrs late leaving. Woman had heart attack on board and we stopped
briefly in Newfoundland to leave her off.
Apart from that and the GLORIOUS weather (about 75 for my first week),
looooonnnngg days and seeing family and friends (of course, also getting
that damn green card) nothing much to report.
Oh yeah, I warned the relevant authorities about Ye 3. The airports have
been sealed off for the appropriate dates.
Bernard.
