I'd also be interested in finding out how to go the other way, from
U.S. format to something to run on a Irish system.
  Any ideas ??

expat Englishman (not his fault, I blame his parents personally :-)) He
seems to be able to read video tapes in all formats and may be able to
    advise you.

They're actually in Windham, a little town just west of Salem.
Strange, they should be in the Salem phone book! Anyway, the number is:

| | Speak to Educational Services in Bedford Mass - the video department
may be able to give you the names of companies in the Mass area
that convert PAL or SECAM to NTSC. (They once did this for my group
to master IVIS videodisks from PAL tape.)

I checked this with ESD&P Europe - they have a similar service in
the UK, although they did warn me that it costs about $1.50 per minute
of video (gulp) to convert a master tape.

    regards,

I just rang them. They subcontract out the work. They told me it's
"frankly astronomical". Costs for transfer and then - if you want it -
for duplication. He said ballpark for about a 7 minute tape was
$100 !!!!
I'll have to try and find a cheaper way.
Bernard.

Geez! I don't blame you! I never saw the invoices, just handled the
taping, but that's definitely out of my league!

| | $100, flatten me gronkers with a gritclub!

There's a way of getting an appallingly poor quality copy:

You find a VCR that plays any format - like the semi-pro Panasonic
D6000 (there's always a few round DEC). And the largest screen
you can find - a projection screen is good.

Beg, steal, borrow or *hire* a vcr camera and copy off the screen.
You can make direct connections for the sound, so at least that
will not degrade too much in quality. Don't expect too much....

    regards

| 505.10 | Here's a few places, but $$$ | DELI::GREENAWAY |  | Mon Feb 27 1989 16:33 | 60 |

I have a wedding video in PAL format that I've looked into transfering
to US NTSC format. When I was in Bedford taking a course I queried
their video department on it. They told me that they always send
their's out to one of two places.

     ProFax Inc

     Video Express
     257 Hillside Ave

     (508) 449-1537 (Contact Lisa Conroy)

Both of these companies are high quality digital translation and
charge you for their invested equipment. They guanentee 100% quality
     duplication.  However, they charge;
     	$200 - 60 minutes
        $265 - 90 minutes
        $360 - 120 minutes
        $500 - 3 hours

I don't know about you, but this was way too steep for me. One
of the companies I spoke to mentioned another cheaper place that
does a screen display-retape process, that the previous reply mentioned.
    They are;

     	Instant Replay
475 Winter St (exit 27B off of Rt128)
        Waltham, MA
        (617) 890-8965

They charge $40 + the cost of a blank for a 60 minute tape, but
admit about an 80% loss in picture quality by their means.
I decided I'd give it a try. They said they couldn't track in on my
tape and the picture wouldn't steady, so they gave me my tape back
    and said "sorry".

I gave up looking for now, but maybe the previous reply has the
right idea, a DIY by scrounging Digital equipment. Although, I
was wondering if you'll also need a European TV monitor, due to
the different horizontal resolution. The US is 4 hundred and something
and Europes is 5 hundred something.

If anybody comes up with a proven DIY setup or a good ideal for
    conversions, please let me know.

    Cheers,

PS. I married a Dublin woman and you know how they are...
We were married in Dublin near Artain and had our reception
at the Beaufield Mews in Stillorgan. A great place for a
         reception.

| | I did an SPI course recently using ED Services equipment. They
had a multi-function recorder (PAL,NTSC.SECAM) and the monitor also
took PAL and NTSC. I used both European and U.S. tapes without
    any problems. Worth a try?

    Dermot,

Where is this Ed Service equipment you talk about, Dublin, Galway,
    Bedford?
You were just viewing, correct. You didn't try a tape-to-tape copy
or a tape-to-monitor-video_camera copy with the different formats
    did you?
If it was Ed Services in Bedford, can you give me a contact to get
    my foot in the door?

| | You can, as some have, buy a video recorder with dual systems, i.e.
at the flick of a switch, it will play either format. Costs about
$1600, but you never have the problem again.

It was in the Dublin office I'm afraid and yes I was just viewing.
A multi-system VCR, as pointed out in .12 would appear to be the
best bet, especially if you anticipate receiving more tapes from
    Ireland.

You might also want to check the VIDEO conference with your query.
Maybe there is a Decie near you...
