    I would have had a hard time travelling in Ireland without a car.
    (Somewhere in this file is a description of my trip, search on my
    last name!).   I was able to visit a lot of places in 3 days with
    a car that I never would have seen using public transportation.
    (I chose to drive across Ireland from Dublin to Galway since I didn't
    have much time.)  I got lost a lot in Dublin after arriving on an
    all night ferry, but once I got used to the types of signs to look
    for, it was comfortable driving.  I think using public transportation
    would probably limit one to more populated areas.
    
    As a woman travelling alone, I felt a lot safer in my own car, so
    that certainly made it worth the extra money for me.

    After calling Aer Lingus a week ago, I found out that they had just
    announced new, cheaper rates subject to the following conditions:
    
    o You must purchase the tickets before the end of February
    
    o You must stay at least a week
    
    After calling a number of places (and using the Amex travel dept.)
    I found that Aer Lingus was indeed the cheapest way to travel to
    Ireland. 
    
    note: I was interested in round trip tickets to/from Ireland.
    I did not ask about one way tickets or different arrival/departure
    sites.
    
    I ended up paying $462 (including taxes, etc.) for a round trip
    ticket from Boston to Shannon and back.

    The man said he is going to Dublin not Ireland. We all know that
    Dublin is west Britain. :-)
    
    All flights stop at Shannon on route to Dublin (all carriers).
    There are daily flights from Logan airport at that time of year.
    Pan Am, Aer Lingus, and Delta fly into Shannon-Dublin.
    
    If you are confining yourself to Dublin alone then the public 
    transport system should suit your pocket and your needs.
    
    The real Ireland is in the west and Shannon is the place to stop
    off in that case. You will need a car if you get off there.
    Car hire at Shannon can be had cheaper than the big name companies,
    but beware car hire in Ireland is expensive.
    
    Burns & Culbert know the deals at the moment and a Clareman knows
    more about deals than my Jewish grandmother. He can get it for you
    wholesale.

    to share my experiences with you.
    
    If hiring a car it's best to work through the airlines I found for
    the best deal.

    John -- my heart goes out to you to lose both Katie and your mother
    the same year.
    
    (Btw, the uncle I told you about who shared your name passed away
    in December, the last one of that generation of O'Reillys in our
    family.  Sure wish I'd been around when they were all younger to
    learn more of the family stories.)

         the way we put it over here is : "we are sorry for your trouble".
    
    It is a way of deliberately understating the magnitude of your loss
    for in most ways it just is not possible for us (those outside
    of your immediate family) to properly understand the impact of 
    such an event. So there is little use in trying to express ourselves
    in a deep way. However it has come to mean everything in terms of
    symathetic support for the bereaved persons. 
    
    There will always be a vacancy there, and life goes on, but your
    request is already met and sure if there is no need for them they'll
    return to us with some added interest.

    My condolences, John. I feel I know what you are going through as
    my own father passed away very suddenly last October. It's getting
    a little easier now, but I don't think the lonliness will ever go
    away.

    Thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers!  The support of
    friends and relatives has been overwhelming both in Nebraska and
    in Texas.
    
    My Mom is surely looking over me right now.  Interesting - the other
    night about 3-4 days after Mom left I woke up with a start (I don't
    remember this - Michelle told me the next day).  My wife then woke
    up and I turned over to her and gave her a big hug.  She asked what
    was up (maybe I shouldn't phrase it like that!) and I said the "someone
    told me to hug you".  Well, let me tell you Mom loves Michelle like
    her own daughter and maybe my Mom was telling me that I should be hugging
    her a bit more?!                  
    
    By the way, back to the original purpose of this note - supposedly
    Tony Bean is going to call me today from San Antonio where he's in
    the midst of travelling so that I can share with him Michelle and
    I's Ireland travelling experiences.

    I should have written in the last note: the support has been
    overwhelming from Nebraska to Texas to Boston area to Ireland and
    possibly other places in the world.  It's just that my *terminal*
