The Globe said yesterday, concerning the mini Euro summit in Greece,
that Haughey told Thatcher (paraphrasing) that there will always
be a strain in Anglo-Irish relations as long as Northern Ireland
remains part of Britain. He said this is in pertinence to the Fr.
Ryan/Belgium case.
This is the first time (in the US) I've ever heard Haughey come
right out with his views. Is this something old or has Haughey
come out of his shell?
Curious George.

In his press conference after the meeting with Mgt. Thatcher he
was asked for his view of the state of affairs of Anglo-Irish
relations.
His response was as follows: "Well as you know, Anglo-Irish relations
are rarely normal, and as I have pointed out many times this will
always be the case as long as the problem of N.I. exists."
That is as close to his words as I can get.
He has also slated the politicisation of individual extradition
cases and said that it makes extradition even more difficult.
He said that extradition was about the rights to freedom of the
individual and as such was a matter for the law and the courts and
that interference by others outside of that process was unhelpful.
(he stopped short of the use of despicable).
