Those of you interested in Ireland and Europe would enjoy
        the following lecture .

        Topic Ireland's place in Europe

        Speaker Dr Garret FitzGerald

        Place Gargan Hall
        		Boston College
        		Chestnut Hill

        Time 8:00 pm
        		Thursday September 22nd.

Dr Fitzgerald was twice Ireland's Prime Minister and is
one of the most knowledgeable Europeans on the EC
        (European Community).

ps for Paddy Colbert Republican Politicians are not welcome; Garret

    Leaprechauns say wow!.

So this is what happens to old politicians.

Garret is already forgotten over here. His tenure of office is
not remembered too fondly by the Irish.

Maybe he should have been European P.M., as he is billed as knowing
a lot about it. He was supposed to know a lot about economics too
(he held a chair in it at U.C.D.). Yet when we gave him an economics
project for 4 years his record is as follows.

Budget Deficit at start : 850 millions.
         " " after 4 years : 1,550 millions.

National Debt at start : 12 billions .
National Debt after 4 years : 25 billions.

Emigration re-started in 1983 and peaked in 1985/86 under his
leadership. Unemployment went from 130,000 to 255,000 in the same
    period.

Since he departed. Unemployment has stopped growing and is now
at 245,000, but emigration continues. We now have one evil instead
of two and that believe me is progress. Its still badness when we
have to measure progress in those terms.

Since he departed the buget deficit has been brought back to
780 millions (less than when he took over in 1982).

Armed violent crime got much worse in his period of tenure. THe
jails were full to bursting point. The prison population is
down, and more importantly armed violent crime is down dramatically.

OH! yeah, Garret can speak French, yet Franco-Irish relations were
not great. He used to curry favour with Mgt. Thatcher at EC summits.
Mr. Mitterand has visited Ireland twice since he left, and its well
known that Franco-Irish relations are better than they have ever
been. The present incumbent is known to be opposed to Thatcher at
    EC summit gatherings.

Most of this man's reputation is not self made, but hyped by a
friendly press that was fed on public inquiries, tribunals, and
wasted energy on untimely/ill-prepared referenda. The British media
loved him as he was a pliant Irishman. A performing chimpanzee who
played for peanuts when real political issues were to be worked.

Snake says, would you give this man the financial controller's job.??
