I was wondering if anyone could help me with some family history.
My mother is applying for her Irish citzenship and we have come
up with a deadend on one part of her family.
The family end we are looking for comes from the town of Cong,
in Connaught county (Conemara?) - their name is Murphy. I know
there are probably alot of them, but the ones I am looking for
any information on, I believe, have a male family name of Hugh.
This name has always been given to the first son in each generation.
We are particularily interested in a Catherine Murphy with an
older brother and sister who were a set of twins (Rose and Hugh).
Catherine and Rose came to New York in the early 1900's, Hugh
stayed in Cong - as far as we know, we still have many relatives
living in Cong. It is important that any information on this
family be gotten, until such time, the Irish citzenship will not
be able to happen.
thanks all - Donalea

Cong is the place where beautiful and expensive Ashford Castle
Hotel is located. See the ads in the New York Times! Ronnie
stayed there back in June of 1984. We went there for lunch one
day but were haughtily told by the matre-d'htel that reservations
were necessary three days in advance. Whew!
All aside, it really is beautiful around Cong.
Mick Jagger apparently likes it there too.

Leaprechauns will give you a pointer.
Cong is in Co. Mayo but is very close to the border of that county
with Co. Galway. (Ashford Castle is actually in Co. Galway but the
entrance avenue is in Co. Mayo).
I would urge you to get the names of those members of your family
who were born in Cong, and the exact date of birth if possible.
Be as precise as you can be. Try to get a mother's or father's name
also to go with the person whose record you are seeking. (This is
very helpful as the parents names are kept on the record of birth,
or baptism).
There are two or three palces you should consider writing to.
1. The parish priest in Cong.
Address as follows :
The Parish Priest
Presbetry,
Cong,
Co. Mayo,
Ireland.
The catholic church records of baptisms is quiet comprehensive
since it was started in the 1830's. If you give him enough data,
a stamped-addressed envelope, and a few bucks for his trouble
he could be your best bet. ($10 would keep him happy I'd say).
2. The registrar of births:
Mayo County Registrar,
Castlebar,
Co. Mayo,
Ireland.
You would need reasonably precise data on birth date for this
guy. If you have the date of birth (say the month, and year, -
or if you have the date of the month but only the approximate
year) then he might be able to help you. A stamped-addressed
envelope, and the fee for the certificate is all you will require.
(fee is approx $2-$5). If you get the cert., you'll be able to
go much further and get much more family data from there and other
sources.
3. In the event that your ancestors were born in the part of Cong
that is technically in Co. Galway you will have to get the
birth certificate from the Co. Galway registrar in Galway city,
(the finest place on the planet).
I would recommend that you try the above first.
Try to obtain a U.S. death cert. for your relative as it may well
specify the exact date of birth, and with that the rest should be
easy.
