I just couldn't let this opportunity go by. You mean to say you
don't know what a "wellie" is ?
It is a Wellington Boot, a form of rubber boot designed to keep
ones feet dry in wet weather.

They are also pretty popular with the dairy farmers around the
Tuam. Rumor has it that one size (small) fits all, and if you take good
care of them they will last you a lifetime. Quite often they
are handed-down from one family member to another.
I've heard stories of farmers using old ones with rubber patchs
on them, but I think that once you get a hole in em', they should
be discarded.

| They're popular in Wales, too. At the National Eisteddfod in 1986,
the local shoe shops were getting new shipments every day to handle
the demand from tourists and day trippers - it was awfully wet weather
to hold a festival in a pasture. I brought mine home to Massachusetts
and now use them in rain, sleet, snow, whatever! Why aren't they sold
in this country, I wonder? Cheap and effective footwear - I couldn't
buy tennis shoes over here for �9, much less boots.

PS - My shoe shop had a variety of sizes, not "one size misfits all".
PPS - I later met a Welsh woman who said she had three pairs - one for
work, one for every day, and her good wellies to wear to church.

What about the use of the humble welly(Donegal spelling) as
a sporting instrument. Welly throwing is quite a popular sport!
Also the sport of putting a sheep's hind legs into an already occupied
pair( Reccomend dunlops for that).

Sorry to say so but Mark Knopfler is an Englishman (but that
is not to say he would not qualify for to play for the Irish soccer
team (80%+ English players and an English manager)). I do not know
if the Germans are as accomodating in allowing English people to
become Germans.
Just thought of a joke!
Packie the Pakistani wanted to become Paddy the Irishman. So he
went to see all the doctors who could do the operation but could
not find any who would!. Eventually he found a drunken American
surgeon who informed him that he could do the operation.
The surgeon explained to Mr P. that the operation involved removing
50% of his brain.Mr P. said o.k.(Wanted to play international soccer)
The surgeon performed the operation but due to "Delerium Tremens"
his hand was a bit shaky and he cut out 95% of Mr. P.'s brain (by
accident). On sobering the surgeon realised this and decided the
would break the news to Mr P. as gently as possible.
The surgeon approached the bed and said to Mr P., "I regret
to tell you,but we have remove 95% of your brain Mr. P.", to
which the unfortunate replied
It's all right old chap and God save the Queen.

I haven't heard the musicians mentioned in .4, but someone who read
my note informs me that if you are primarily interested in real,
traditional, Irish folk music, you're liable to be disappointed,
but if you just want to have fun and bring the kids, then they're
OK. I was just giving them a little publicity because I'm a Trustee
of the Library that's putting on the concert.
To make up for it I'm including the concert list for Patrick Street.
