I am Mike McCrohan, and I am based in Kanata - the Canadian 
Subsidiary headquarters.

I have been in Canada for a little over two years in the 
capacity of Canadian Telecoms Manager.

Prior to that, I worked in Ayr, Scotland (Hello Drew, Donald 
and company) for 8 years as Support Tech, Mnfg. Eng., Telecoms
Project manager.

Prior to that, I worked in Galway as a tech for 5-1/2 years.

    I am Rene Aungier, and I am based in Application Development Group
    (ADG)Ferney-Voltaire, France. I am a development specialist on a
    Contract Admin system for Europe.
    
    I have been here 2 years and 2 months. I also work in my non project
    chargeable time as Technical advisor to a large group who develop
    projects like SMART, CHAMP, OTASCS etc.
    
    I previously worked for Ericcsonn in Spain.
    
    I was born and reared in Dublin and have travelled and worked in
    Greece, Spain and North Africa. I am an Irish speaker and love the
    old Irish culture. I lived (KeVin) for a time in Clare and Belfast.
    
    I worked for a famous software house called ALTERGO in Ireland.
    
    I am married to a Spaniard and we have 2.5 children.
    
    I am a nationalist and love both Irish history, music, dance and
    most of all the language.

    I am John O'Reilly and I am based in Dallas, Texas, USA.  I am a
    DECsite Sr. Project Manager(Computer Room Consulting, Design and
    Build for Digital's Customers in the South Central Area (TX,NM,OK,CO)).
    I joined DEC in Sep. '86.  I am a newlywed; married in Sep. 86.
    I have lived in Dallas about 5 years.
    
    I was born in Santa Cruz, California and raised in Omaha, Nebraska
    and received my Mechanical Eng'g degree from the Univ. of Nebraska.
    I am halfway through my Masters Degree in Eng'g Mngmnt at Southern
    Methodist Univ. and just became a Registered Professional Engineer
    in the state of Texas.

    Before joining DEC I designed and built clean rooms for the
    semiconductor industry: Mostek and Texas Instruments and as a
    consultant for Dallas Semiconductor and HDR Consulting Engineers.
    
    I enjoy dreaming about visiting Ireland, falling in love and never
    leaving!  I love sports, Guinness, all dogs esp. Irish Wolfhounds and 
    travelling.
    
    I am the youngest of five kids and have almost 8 nieces and nephews.
    
    If any Field Service Managers located in Ireland are listening,
    and want to increase their revenue, maybe you need the revenue that
    could come in via DECsite!  Actually it's not an approved product
    internationally.
    
    My wife, Michelle, and I have enjoyed this Notesfile very much and
    plan (tentatively) to travel to Ireland around Christmas time. 
    If any of you want to enjoy a very nice (2800 sg ft with pool) home
    in warm Dallas at the end of Dec., beginning of Jan. let me know
    as we're looking for someone to lease it out to while we're gone.

  I am Jack McLaughlin and I am based in the Philadelphia data center working 
primarily on internal systems(CHAMP, SMART, DECMAIL).  I came from an 
IBM RJE shop 3 yrs ago as a computer operator and now manage 3 785's, 1 8550,
and 2 750's.  My wife (formerly Wendy McMurray) has worked for Digital for 
over 5 years.  We have a 6 month old son, John Alexander (Alec).  I 
totally enjoy this notes file since I am second generation Scot/Irish and
am ashamed to say ignorant of my heritage.  

  Rene, what happened to Irish history from World War 2 to present?  Also, 
could we possibly get some Scottish history somewhat like Rene has done.

    	I'm John Tough from the Allentown Pa. field service office (hi
    Jack).  I'm a senior engineer working mainly in VAX-clusters and
    networks.
    
    	I am the first of my "clan" ever to be born outside of Scotland,
    (New Jersey).
    
    	My father's ancestors are from the Aberdeen area, and my mother's
    (Cameron) are from Pasiley.
     
    	I still have quite a few of my fathers relatives in Scotland. 
    
    	This is the best note's file I've found yet!!!
    	Hopefully, I'll see some of you at he Highland Games in the
    Eastern U.S. this summer.

    I'm Dick Leonhardt and I'm the quality manager for the CSSE Peripheral
    Systems Group.  Born in the Bronx.  Got an M.E. degree from Notre
    Dame.
    
    Three grandparents born in Ireland, two in Cork (McNamara and Daly),
    one in Cavan (Arkins).  Great-grandfather Leonhardt born in Germany.
    
    Wife is the former Mary Faith O'Grady.  On her side we also have the
    Finches from Belfast, Moutrays from Tyrone (and way back Scotland).

    I'm Roxanne O'Connell (nee Vigeant) and I work in Storage Systems
    in Maynard.  I'm an Administrative Systems Specialist supporting
    and developing administrative processes for Storage Systems Group
    Materials.  I'm currently working on an Electronic Approval System
    modelled after the one in Spitbrook, but tailored to Inventory
    Requisitions.  This has been exciting work, but also time consuming,
    so that I haven't been able to read the Notes for a while now. 
    
    
    By the way...George and Kevin.  Willie is on his way over again.
     I've been getting calls from a real estate person leaving messages
    for him.  
    
    Also...did you get to the Relativity Concert last weekend???  It
    was hilarious as well as great.  Johnny and Phil Cunningham (of
    Silly Wizard) just have to be experienced as a duo on the stage
    to be really appreciated.  They really shine!!  The crack was ninety
    and the music was exquisite.
    
    Oh...the Irish connection is through my husband.  He was born in
    Waterford and raised in Carrick-on-Suir (a place familiar to those
    who work in Clonmel.)  We used to have a hotel there called Tinvane
    Hotel on the road to Piltown.

    I'm Tom Stanton, Senior Tech Writer in Merrimack NH. I write
    documentation, troubleshoot our system & its users, & plan
    equipment/software strategies for our group (primarily pub- lishing
    systems). I've been know to give a few seminars & some training from
    time to time as the Irish in me cannot deny the priviledge of a stage &
    a captive audience, despite the fact that I get nervous speaking in
    front of people. 
    
    Irene & I are 3rd generation Irish, raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and
    we have two children to carry on the heritage. Our dream was finally
    uttered a few nights ago when Peter O'Toole related a time when he and
    John Huston were living in Irelend. They got drunk in the morning &
    later found themselves riding in their pajamas while hunting hare.
    Irene and I agree this would be our kind of life so we are hoping to
    win the lottery soon. Otherwise our modest apartment in Manchester will
    have to do... 
    
    
    

    I'm mostly Norwegian (3 grandparents) with some Irish and Scottish
    contributed by my maternal grandmother.  The source, I'm sure, of my
    reddish (well mostly grey now) beard.  She was a second (third?) cousin
    to the King of Norway and like many in other royal families in the late
    19th century, she was sent off to the U.S. with her husband (a viking
    archetype: 6 foot 6, 280 pounds at a time when the average U.S. male
    was 5 feet 4 inches) to fend for themselves. 
    
    My wife is Irish, Scottish, and German.  Her paternal line is Steele
    from Ireland and Corder from the northwest coast of England/southwest
    coast of Scotland.
    
    I have an interest in Celtic history.  Mainly in the early origins
    of the Celts and the influence of the Vikings (which is really my
    main interest).
    
    I am extremely fond of Celtic music.  I have been known to play
    Scottish pipe music at the loudest setting of my car stereo, which
    has prompted many stares and questions about "What is that!!!!?".
    I also dearly love ballads, jigs, reels, and Irish pipes.

    Re .10: About your grandmother: Correct me if I'm wrong but I though
    that since the Union of Kalmar till 1903 (or is it 1907?, I don't
    recall the exact date), there was no king in Norway. Since the end
    of the napoleonic wars till early 20th century, the king of Norway
    was the king of Sweden, and before it was the king of Denmark.
    Anyway, when Norway separated from Sweden, they got a Danish prince
    as their king.

    I was refering to the King of Norway at the time I heard the story
    (circa 1947-8).  I'm not very knowledgeable on recent history in
    Norway, so I accept what you say as true.

    Turning up your stereo to warp 10 to listen to bagpipe music, says
    everything about which genes have won the bio-war in your DNA spiral.
    
    I frankly admit to being utterly subsumed by the skirl of the war-pipes
    and I find them at once blood-curdling & spine-tingling. No other
    instrument does that for me. I think its possible to take on the
    world to the sound of a good pipe-march tune (Marchlua UiNeill is
    a good example).

    My name is Teresa Downey and I have just recently joined DEC. I
    work in IS ADG, Reading with the newly formed Text Retrieval as
    a Development Specialist.
    
    I have been living in London now for almost two years. I was born
    and bred (as they say in the old country) outside Newry in Northern
    Ireland. I went to college in Belfast and then spread my wings and
    came here.
    
    My history and family - 100% Irish. I was reared where my father
    was born and my mother is from Co. Cavan. I have five sisters and
    two brothers (guess my religious denomination!). I go back home
    about three times a year - I miss the blarney. 
    
    I think that this Notes file is great. I admit though that I do
    get rather heated about some of the N.I. political discussions.

        Hello, I'm John Donovan and I work for the Mail Interchange
        Group in Reading, UK. I was born / brought up in Glasgow and
        came to work in England after going to college - I've been
        with DEC 3 years now.
        
        My mother is from Derrihanighan (phonetic spelling !) near
        Lurgan, on the shores of Lough Neagh. My father's family is
        from Limerick. 
        
        I like both Irish and Scottish traditional music, as long as
        it's played in the right spirit - eg groups like De Danann,
        Stockton's Wing, Boys of the Lough, Ferdia and people like
        Matt Molloy and Paddy Glackin. I also like LOUD bagpipe
        music. (both the mouth and armpit varieties) 
   
        My family are very musical, mainly fiddle players - I learned
        accordian and guitar first, but now I play mainly on the
        mandolin. (hornpipes, reels, etc) 
        
        I've been an occasional reader of this notesfile, but now
        I'll keep up to date with it - I'd especially like to hear
        about new artists / records, especially less established
        ones, since Irish and Scots music doesn't get a lot of 
        exposure in England.

    Hello, I'm Michael Cassily, and I live in Andover, Massachusetts,
    about 20 miles north of Boston. I recently joined Digital after
    20 years in the software business (15 at IBM). I work in SSG on
    Spitbrook Road, Nashua, New Hampshire.
    
    I'm 5th generation Irish on my father's side (Cassily, Butler),
    and 4th generation on my mother's side (Moran). As one might expect,
    with the passage of generations, there are traces of other
    nationalities mixed in, but I'm predominately Irish.
    
    My wife is predominately Scots-Irish. Her family came to the
    Northeastern US from Canada 2-3 generations ago.
    
    I'm very interested in Irish and Celtic culture, and I'm very
    interested in current events in Ireland. We don't get what I consider
    to be a lot of information on current events over here, unless it
    involves major events or turmoil of some kind. I am a current
    subscriber to the Irish Newsletter, and it has filled a large void.
    
    I'm very interested in tracing my ancestors(Cassily). Unfortunately, Our
    family is quite small, and I think there are only 16-18 families
    with that surname that I can locate in the US. The vast majority
    of those families have no traceable connection with mine. In another
    note I'll identify what I do know about the roots of the family
    name.

    When I was at national school in Galway (up to 12 years old), I
    had a classmate whose name was Casly. Casserly is also a very common
    name in the Galway region. It is possible that Cassily is a US
    derivative of Casserly. SO maybe your rootsock is west of Ireland.

    	I have entered notes in this file a few times so just as short
    note.  I work for Digital in Santa Clara California.  I was born
    in Aberdeen Scotland but my family came to California when was very
    young.  However the rest  of  my family have returned to Scotland
    so I am the only one left in the United States so I try to get back
    there as often as possible.  I work as a software specialist in
    a delivery group.

	A Chairde Gael,
			Robin Patrick Finbarr Delaney from the principality
of Carriagh Dubh, Corcaigh. Born and bred a Corkman after the parents saw the
light and moved from Dublin. 
			I moved to Glasgow 3.5 years ago and worked in DEC Ayr
for 3 years as a contractor. Glasgow is a good spot for a Paddy. There's
loads of celtic culture and even 5 Gaelic Football teams.
			Currently working in DEC-park Munich. A great city but
I'm suffering severe Celtic withdrawl symptoms, however I'm keeping up to date
with this file and The Irish Emigrant. Maybe the Beerfest will get me back to 
normal (if only there was a Beamish tent.....).

    Hello all, I am Derek O'Mahoney and based in DECpark Reading for
    the last two and a half years, first as a Telecoms Project Manager
    and more recent as Bandwidth Planning Manager.
    
    Prior to that I worked in Galway for six years as a tech,Module
    Test and then Telecomms tech.
    
    Father from Waterford,Mother from Tipp, born in Limerick and lived
    in Galway - my real home now. Wife Mary born Boston and reared in
    Galway, so a fair cross section.
    
    Love the notes but must admit to getting hotheaded on some of the
    political issues - so now keep the gob shut on those ones.
    
    BTW is Thursday nights in Houlihans dead? The reason is that I will
    be in Boston area for two weeks from next Monday(28th).

	Hello to you all,

	I've been reading this conference for some weeks and decided
	it was time I was owning up!

	I'm Cathy and another of the Irish line being from the
	Murray clan.  (I know that's more usually Scotts but honest
	they're all from Dublin and if you believe me granny I should
	be sitting in the homes of the Dukes of Atholl - but then
	shouldn't we all, if not the Kings of Tara!)

	I've never been to Ireland although I also have friends at
	Kinsale and feel quite strongly tied in to my Celtic past.

	I joined DEC on 15-5 this year and work as a Software
	Support specialist at Solent. I'm liberally splattered around
	various conferences ..... but this one took so much time to
	read and catch up with.  I still get confused as to which
	of Paddy and Murphy are where!  (where are yer fellers?)

	Hopefully I'll get the hang of it all soon, though what I'll
	cotribute I don't know.  Still if there's a local hooley I
	shall come into me own.

	For now I'll sign off with a :-)

      It is nice to see all the new faces in the file.  Just as a helpful
    hint,  don't ever believe what Murphy says.  He has a difficult
    time dealing with reality.  8*)  Sorry Murphy I couldn't pass it

    Don't believe a word of it, Murphy is the only credible voice of
    sanity and reason in this file, unless, like Paddy, you're over the 
    hill, in which case Mr. McCrohan is yer man. 
    
    Murphy's wisdom is more eternal, he deals with essentials in an
    absolute sense, beauty, love, honour, life (the true meaning thereof).
    He is also an ardent admirer of the Pogues, which says more than
    any thousand words possibly could.
    
    I stand in awe of this beacon of knowledge, one of the true modern-day
    heros. And what's more, he is the essence of modesty. A gentleman, a 
    scholar and good friend.
