Seeing as 168.* has revived interest in the Scottish elements of Celtic
culture... a related topic. Has anyone (in the UK) been following the
"Tutti Fruittie" TV show, about a super-annuated Glasgow rock band?
It's been pretty enjoyable, though sometimes a bit long-drawn out (in
the way that a German or Italian movie can get long-drawn out in the
observation of the characters).
It's supposed to be a comedy, though recent events have included a
drugs overdose, a stabbing, a suicide by drowning (good Glasgow
humour).
The dialect has created problems for some viewers down south, though
the actors are more consistently clear-spoken than the characters would
be in real life. One suggestion was to show sub-titles...
I saw a rather funny news broadcast, by the way, about a prison riot in
Glasgow, when one of the prisoners' wives was shown shouting to her
husband on the prison roof, with sub-titles to explain (roughly) what
she was saying.

Good program, eh ? The Glasgow accents are bit difficult to follow,
especially for you english, being an East coaster , the East coast
being the centre of civilisation as we know it, i sometimes found
the accents difficult to follow.
Of course , the west coast accent and some of the Irish accents
are reasonably similar as there are so many Irish in the West coast
of Scotland, as I said before , they eat their bairns in the west
:-)

Emma Thompson, who played the fabulous Suzie Kettles in Tuttie Fruttie,
is English, I believe. Her accent was fabulous, what clinched it
for me was the nasality of it. My faked Glasgow accent has always
been based on the Big Yin, with lots of drunken head-shaking and
stuff, no? Bit noo it'll be done with my nostrils pinched. (Having
your nostrils pinched is nothing to the fate of a wee Englishman
wandering the back streets of Glesgae going "Allo pal, yawright?"
I speak from experience, but fortunately it's the wild streets of
Hillhead I wander when we visit the burd's faimly.)
