The Pogues and the Dubliners have now released 'The Irish Rover'
as a single in Britain. It sounds just like the Pogues (strangely
enough) but with a Dubliner (is it Ronnie Drew ?) singing some of
the verses and Shane MacGowan doing the others. (Note I said DOING
as opposed to singing . . .)
The Pogues used to be called 'Pogue Mahone' but apparently a Gaelic
speaking DJ on Radio Clyde, the Glasgow independent local radio
station, spread the word round the media what it meant, so they
decided to shorten it.
I seem to remember a Dubliner's song called 'Monto' or 'Going up
to Monto' which featured the offending phrase with reference to
the Queen of England, so maybe that's why the Dubliners made the
record with them.
For those unfamiliar with the Pogues, they're an Anglo Irish group
who're accepted more as a Rock band than a folk group (in Britain
anyway) They play a mixture of original and traditional music and
have made two albums, 'Red Roses For Me' and 'Rum, Sodomy and the
Lash'.
They play very fast and furious rather than with a great deal of
skill, and Shane's singing is not for the Squeamish. Having said
that, I quite like some of their faster stuff, but I don't like
the way they murder slow songs, like 'The old triangle' and 'The
band played Waltzing Mathilda'.
They nearly had a hit single in Britain last year with a song
called 'Sally MacLennan' which was quite good.

| I just heard a Pogue's song on the radio on my way into work
called "Navigator - Light the Way" or at least something
like that. It sounds more like a American country/folk song
with bagpipes thrown in. I am also surprized that the singer
on that particular song has seemingly an American accent but yet
they are an Anglo/Irish band? Is the singer Irish or English?
He sounded more Irish to me.

| Ther's a (surprise!, surprise!) record out to commemorate the 25th
birthday of the Dubs. As far as I know it will include the guests
mentioned in .0 and that would mean having The Pogues/Ronnie Drew
version of The Irish Rover. I'll get 'round to buying it when my
rich uncle in the States sends me a few bob.

Dubliners had a gig in Helsinki, Finland last night (Friday 15th).
They played nicely and got good success and three encores.
Barney played an awesome banjo solo. It was worth of seeing indeed.
