A DECstation 316 had a Conner 200 Mb (Type 40) drive that died.
I tried to replace it with a Seagate 500 Mb disk but no CMOS disk type
setting over 200 Mb can be found.
- Can a larger disk be used with DECstation 316? (if so how?)
- Can the CMOS BIOS be upgraded to more common disktypes?
- Can the EZ software help to overcome the BIOS disksize limitations?
Or should I consider the DECstation 316 as a dead system?

Hi Theo,
>> - Can a larger disk be used with DECstation 316? (if so how?)
Probably. Your 3rd question provides the best hope if you are not
willing to go SCSI.
>> - Can the CMOS BIOS be upgraded to more common disktypes?
Doubtful, but there are companies that exclusively sell bios upgrades.
Probably not worth it.
>> Can the EZ software help to overcome the BIOS disksize limitations?
I'm not familiar with this "EZ software" but if it provides a boot
sector overlay, then it will probably work by allowing a standard CMOS
disk type to be selected and the full disk capacity communicated to the
operating system (DOS?) after boot.
>> Or should I consider the DECstation 316 as a dead system?
Systems are never dead if they serve your needs.
Cheers,
/Bill

| 3785.2 | DiskManager does it | wazock.lzo.dec.com::taylor_m | Tue Feb 11 1997 14:52 | 7 | |
I've always found DiskManager from, I think, OnTrack systems works a treat under circumstances like this. It is often supplied with large IDE drives for just this circumstance. regards Martin | |||||
