Looks at the RFCs for NFS, RPC, XDR.  A PostScript version of the NFS V3
spec is at http://www.sun.com/sunsoft/connectathon/

There are also some USENET papers on the finer points.

I'm surprised you weren't able to satsify your curiousity with a simple
AltaVista search.
