| | I just pulled up the "HSM for Digital Unix" SPD to find out what it
    was.

The rev it describes (the only rev listed on a search for HSM) was
    HSM Version 1.2A.

    The SPD says:

     "SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

o Digital UNIX Operating System, any of the 3.0 or 3.2 versions

Note: Not supported on Digital UNIX, Version 4.0

o Open SCSI CAM for for Digital UNIX, Version 3.0 or 3.1
o POLYCENTER Advanced File System (AdvFS) Version 3.0 or 3.2."

If you can overcome that hump (because you happen to know there is a
version of HSM that runs on DU V4), then you'd have to worry about what
kind of tool it uses to write out the file systems to the optical
jukeboxes. If it used dd you might be okay. But if it has to know
about the file system structure, then it would only be able to write
out single-level filesystems. AdVFS is not multi-level.

If all they care about is the jukeboxeyness, then you'd have to have a
vanilla Digital UNIX box running V3.2G or whatever the latest alphabet
character is, and then import its jukebox file systems on the MLS+ box
as single-level NFS V2 file systems. Presumably the AdVFS part would
be transparent, because it's really on another system.

| | Just heard my cue again...:-)

I would expect that with a product like HSM (which will be used for
things like archiving), Support would be a key issue, regardless of
whether it actually works or not.

| | HSM definitely does not run on Digital UNIX V4.0(a, b, c, ...).

| | From the HSM conference:-

    >POLYCENTER Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) Solution for Digital
    >UNIX,Version 1.2A, was approved for EOL (End-of-Life) on October 30, 1996,
    >by Storage PM&D Review. Acting on this, the product was put into
    >Maintenance Mode on DSPS effective 6-Jan-97. The product is still
    >orderable until 6-Jan-98 and still shippable until 6-Apr-98.

There are plans for HSM functionality to be integrated with Networker

| | Hi
Thanks, so does anyone know if Networker runs on MLS+ V4
with its HSM functionality, I just checked the new spd

| | Terri,

I guess you saw a complete lack of MLS+ in the SPD :-)

So the "supported" is clear. Now, as to whether it actually works,
who has got the kit to try it?

| | Or more to the point, the "unsupported" is clear :-)
This should be thoroughly tested inhouse before customer expectations
(and definately sales) are made.
