101.0. "Unit Histories ?" by TMAKXO::RMUMFORD () Wed Jun 16 1993 16:11

    Anyone out there who can either point me to a book or other source for
    a particular units history? I'm looking for info on the 3rd Missouri
    Vols Infantry (Union), from august 1864 onward. My GG Grandfather was a
    part of the unit, in particular, Co. E. I think he wound up in Alabama
    around June, 1865. 
    
    I read the notes about the Battlefields having the computers available,
    but I won't have a chance to get to one for a few months. 
    
    Any info appreciated.

	I'd recommend writing the National Archives, or calling, and getting them to send you copies of their NATF form 80. The phone # is: (202) 501-5170. The address is: General Reference Branch (NNRG) National Archives and Records Administration 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20408 The only info REQUIRED for a search of your ancestor's service records is Name, branch of service (army,navy,marine corp), State from which he served, war in which he served or the dates he served, and whether he was Union or Confederate. Any other info such as you already have will expedite the search. One other source you should try is the _War of the Rebellion Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies_ published by the Library of Congress (I think) in 1922. Missouri has required registration in each county only during the years 1883 to 1893 and since 1909. The state did not achieve 90 percent registration of births until 1927 and of deaths until 1911. Write to the appropriate county clerk for records before 1910. Those from 1883 to 1893 are also available from the Missouri State Archives. State Records of Births and Deaths Although the files are not open for public inspection, you can obtain copies of the state's births and deaths registered after 1 January 1910 by writing to: Bureau of Vital Records P.O. Box 570 Jefferson City, MO 65102 Marriage Records Marriage records have been kept by Missouri county clerks from the earliest days of each county. Some records date from the early 18O0s when the area was a territory without counties. Statewide registration of marriage began in 1881, and the files are most complete after that date. You can obtain copies of these documents from the various county clerks. Divorce Records Divorce proceedings have been filed with a court of common pleas, a circuit court, or the state legislature. Most divorce records can be obtained by contacting the appropriate circuit court clerk in the county where the plaintiff resided. The Bureau of Vital Records has divorce records from 1948 to the present. Also, there's Dyer's "Compendium of the War of Rebellion" which details unit histories. The Bedford, Mass. Public Library, for one, has it.

	During the CW the states(many, several, all?) had what amounted to a state version of the sect of war, in Illinois it was the Adj. Gen for Ill. After the war, again in Ill. a history of Ill. units was published. I had my neice copy the desired unit from the University library. You might try and see if Mo. had the same. I spent 20 years in Mo. and I don't know, but probably the library at Univ of Mo, Columbia would be the logical place to try.
