| | >> Reality, Why This Hobby Is Dying???
Your list pretty much sums it up for me, Steve. After trying to track all the
Upper Deck variants (hobby, collector, investor, swindler...), and then
all of the Ultras, Stadium Clubs, Flair...I gave up on all of them and went
back to what got me into collecting 27 years ago, Topps. Basic, simple Topps.
(I also like Conlons because of all the old players my father used to talk
about. I'm amazed at all the names I recognize from his stories.)
I'm just sticking with regular Topps baseball and basketball. It's a lot
more fun. I can pick up a few packs hear and there at just about any
variety or drug store. Even though that's not the most economical way to
fill a set, it's a lot more fun and a LOT cheaper than chasing the premium
cards and inserts.
Dan
P.S. anyone want to buy my gold cards?

| | Hey,

pretty much feel the same, I will buy a few new boxes when I get the
fever, but only hockey and usually low end. Score, topps, and UD. I
think that it really sucks that product comes out and the factory wants
50+ a box. Give me a break. I would rather buy one or two older
Bruins cards, which I am doing. I tried collecting a few baseball
players I liked but I just couldn't keep up. I ahve not bought baseball
for 2 years and I don't even recoginize the names any more. I go to
card shops and I ask what sells, the older stuff never does its weird.
If your in it for the money God Luck to ya, I find it difficult to even
    sell major stars these days.

| | Funny, I've started doing the same thing as Dan in reply .1 I've gone back
to just Topps (hockey for me)...and mostly just picking up packs here and there.
>Why This Hobby Is Dying???
Card companies don't think so... There must be more sets out now than ever.
In fact, I heard on the radio this morning that there's going to be Nancy
Kerrigan cards (88 card set).

That's exactly the reason why I gave up on collecting sports
cards, now I just concentrate on Non-Sports, and even if there
are quite a few non sport sets coming out these days, at least
it's only 2 or 3 at the most producing a particular subject, not
15 or 20 companies putting out the same baseball/football/hockey/
    	basketball stuff year after year.

Yeah but the point some enjoy collecting one player and you
don't stand a chance because by the time you THINK you have all of the
93's of Bledsoe along comes the 94's in 12-93 !!.

I concentrate on Stadium Club but still you want to go all out for a
top dog in a sport. It's just damn hard trying to keep up with
all the companies producing Molitors. *(8)>

I have gotten very frustrated as a team collector (totally pissed).
In trying to collect Redskins (degrading to native americans) cards
I have just about given up on the 1990s (lousy decade).

It really got gross in 92 (card companies are money grubbing scum),
93 there must have been 20 different football sets (try 40), I thought
that couldn't last, but it seems 94 will be just as bad too (card
company scum has gotten even worse, charging more and more per box).
Who is buying all these different football issues?? (Steve Hayes),
what kind of a "collector" can possibly keep up?? (someone with
loads of $$ and loads of free time).

I'm still filling in older years, at least there are usually just
one or two sets per year for most early years and I don't have to
worry about any of those lovely high priced inserts (won't be worth
    shit in 5 years)

| | You're absolutely right.....as a team collector, there're FAR
too may cards and subsets to have to go through. As y'all know, I'm
a Charger team collector and here's what I had to go through to find
the 1993 Chargers. That's 112 card sets...count them 112!

| 636.9 | Card Companies Did Overkill | MKOTS1::AMIRALIAN |  | Tue May 03 1994 13:58 | 20 |
| |
How about Too many card companies got greedy at the same time.
Instead of going for quality, they flooded the market with
gimmicks. There are subsets, gold cards, series I & IIs. The
        card market is oversaturated.

Hint: DO NOT SELL TODAY !! HANG ON TO ALL YOUR CARDS !!

Once the overkill is done, then watch the value of cards pre-1992
take off !! Then, there were fewer subsets and cards to go around
making these cards more desirable in, say 1998 or 2000. This is the
time to BUY ONLY, and the older sets as prices Drop, e.g. 1989
Upper Deck Baseball once at $200 complete set now down to $140 and
        less.

One set I will buy are the Kerigan's, but I want the bad Girl too.
        Who's doing Tonya ?

I know this is not of major interest to many in this notes file, but
since both of my daughters are skaters (actually both have skated on
the same ice as Nancy and Paul) does anyone have any info on the Nancy
    Kerrigan cards?

I've heard it's going to be sold as wax, not sets, but I have not heard
much other info about her cards.

    Any help will be appreciated!

| 636.11 | The LOOOOOOONG way round | ASABET::KELLY_M |  | Wed Jun 29 1994 12:08 | 20 |
| | The long way round....
I do some catd shows as you all know. The shows are terrible and to
pass the time we usually get into stream of conciousness (sp)
discussions - Example : Does anyone have an Oswald Cobblepott Rookie
Card, wasn't he drafted by the Penguins, he's a winger, his cards are
priced at a fin. Another example - Thw Witness protection program
Subset, wh's in it, how many cards, double prints.

Well my dream is that Flair puts out a 10.00 pack that has all inserts
except for one card that can be used to build the regular set.
Hopefully they will be issued in regions ( probably six) in Rack,
Jumbo, regular packs, sets and vendor cases with updates for
each, and of course there will be hobby and retail all available
also in gold and silver.. Oh and don't forget the mail ins and
the special packs for Sams and BJ's and Gas stations.
THen and only then will we start back to
reality. I know its the long way around.....but it will probably get
    us there.

    Mike
