| 268.1 | anyone planning an order? | DDIF::TANCILL | long may you run | Thu Jun 13 1991 14:53 | 18 |
| |
In keeping with John's 269.55 reply, is anyone trying to put
together an order for fleer ultra? I would like to get a box
or two and it would be nice to get a price break by being part
of a larger order. I know of one dealer who just bought several
cases, but these early cases are going for 2 1/2 times the factory
price, which translates to somewhere between $50-$70/box. I would
like to pay no more than $50, anyboby putting together an order?

If not and some of you are interested in boxes, I can at least
approach this dealer with say a five or six box order and see what
kind of price we could get. If you're interested send me mail, no
obligation is implied, once you know the exact price you can decide
not to take the box if it's more than you wanted to spend. (I may do
    this myself)

You mean you didn't tell everyone where you were getting them for
    $25/box, $40/2 boxes John ...

Fer shame. I can't believe you're not sharing with your fellow

| | Of course I wouldn't mark it up for my fellow
    noters/collectors/patron "saint's" of the hobby :-)

Seriously, on the ultra's my price would be your price, half the
reason I asked is that I'm not thrilled with my price. I wanted to
see if anyone was putting something together that could be a better
deal. I won't be making anything on the deal, except perhaps some
future good will with this dealer if I can do some business with him.

Since most seem to trust fleer (ultra will be 15% of normal 1991
production), does anyone know what that math translates to?

I just "locked" in at $60/box. I will pick up 5 boxes total
this saturday for sure, I'm going to open 2 myself, that leaves
    3. First right of refusal goes to replies .2 & .3, walt and mike
let me know if you definitely want them. Assuming the "market" does
go nuts overnight we could probably get more at this price if others
    are interested.

The cards themsleves are nice looking, I like the fronts with their
gray top and bottom boarders, pictures running full to the sides.
Nice photos for the most part on the fronts, the backs contain 3
additional photos, one face shot in center with two in-action body
shots on either side. Not really much exciting on the back.

My one complaint about the cards is that the stock seems very thin,
for cards that are selling for $1.50-$2.00 a pack you think you could
get thicker stock that wasn't quite as prone to getting bent. I saw
more then a few people open bent corner packs (perhaps this particular
    dealer had dropped his box).

As John mentioned in the base note there are three subsets: great
performances, prospects, & the gold 'ultra team'. The gold cards are
a 10 card subset with the normal three photo back on the front, with
the backs containing a full narrative on the player.

The going price was $50/box, a have a few boxes left if any is
interested at that price. If anyone puts something together for
less please let me know, I have two sets to make (I for my oldest
    and one for Dad).

They do win the award for nicest looking cards while laying on their
sides in a box. Looking at a stack from an angle, the fronts are a
multi-colored spectacular, the back when in order a hip rainbow of
colors. Certainly that's worth $1-$2/pack right there! :-)

I essentially bought n boxes at the going (retail) rate sunday,
which was $50/box. This dealer grabbed early shipment of cases
at the beginning of last week in hopes the price would go up by last
weekend, instead it came down since everyone else had their cases by
then also. I got a few boxes for $50 since this dealer has done me
a few favors recently, so I did him one by buying a few off him @ $50.
Good thing is now I consider us even.

I haven't tried calling ads in SCD, I was under the impression there
that you need to deal at the case level rather than a few boxes, no?

A couple dealers in SCD had 'boxes' for $35...
I hoping that in a month or so, they'll be down to $30

I couldn't find my favorite Cuban player either, his
name is Juan "Speedy" Gonzalez. You talk about Rickie Henderson,
this guy would put Rickie to shame. He was so fast, he had to
slow down just to allow his shadow to catch up with him.
One time he got a hit, and before his bat hit the ground,
he was already standing on first base. This was back in Cuba
in the good old days before Castro spoiled everything, so there
is no way for you guys to confirm this, you will have to just
	take my word for it.
 |

Yes, I know there is a Juan Gonzalez in the majors, but even
though he is no slouch, his middle name is not "Speedy", and
	it isn't the same player.

Castro shut Cuba down in 1961. Speedy's got to be at least 49 or 50 by
    now.

The Ultra update set is out around here (nh), 120 cards plus a set of
the stickers. This set is packed with everyone they forgot or missed
in the original 1-400. Players like Bagwell, Juan Gonzalez, Scott
Erickson, Knoblauch, Luis Gonzalez, Ivan Rodriguez, Brian Hunter, etc.

Saw them for $19 this weekend at a show, not bad if you go by the
value Beckett's is attechig to this set already ($15-$22 in november,
$16-$24 in the new december baseball beckett's i think). I picked up
one for the collection to go with my 1-400, the nicest thing about
them is that unlike many Ultra's from the low number wax, these update
cards are all mint condition, no frayed scraggly edges, they look nice.

    jeff

p.s. John, you'll want to grab a few dozen sets for your favorite
    hurler, Heathcliff :-)
