| 171.1 | Babe AND Lou???!! | BBCARD::MCAULIFFE |  | Wed Aug 29 1990 10:28 | 18 |
|  |
	I'm am by no means an expert on autographs but I do know that SINGLE
	signed baseballs of the Babe, in nice shape, go for $ 2-4 thousand
	dollars!!! Since you also have Lou Gehrig on it, obviously it has
	to give additional value. I don't know who Bobby Johnson is, but
	if he's also a Hall of Famer, it will help.
	As far as determining a price, the things to check are:
		1) Color of the ball (is it yellowing???);
		2) Type of ball (official American League???);
		3) Where are the signitures (is Babe or Lou on
		     the sweet spot???)
		4) Are the signitures clear???
	Hope this helps....
	Dan

|  |     1) The ball is yellowing
    2) It is an Official American League ball
    3) Babe's signature is on the sweet spot, Lou's is not
    4) The signatures are clear

    Bobby Johnson was a pitcher for the Red Sox. He's saying that all
    3 signed during the same game.

| | In this weeks Sports Collector's Digest the Brigandi Coin company of
 New York City has a Ruth/Gehrig signed AL ball with Ruths signature on the
 "sweet spot" listed for sale at "a very reasonable price" for $8,950.00
  Thier number is 212-869-5352.

| | If its in good shape, that ball may be worth $10,000. I've seen Lou G.
    signature alone on plain paper, (Index card) going for $3,000 to
    $4,000. Sounds like you have a real GEM there, your very lucky. As I
    understand it, Lou G. stuff is very scarce, and may out price the
    Babe's autographs, probably because he died so young. Bring it to a
    reputable card/memorabilia dealer and he may appraise it for you. I
    know Fred Harris at the Shop in W. Concord would appraise it for you,
    and he enjoys seeing the old stuff, he's as knowledgeable as anyone and
    has enough contacts to sell it for you if you decide to cash in on its
    worth.

| | The ball is yellowing naturally and all the signatures are still bold,
    the Bobby Johnson is slightly smeared on the "nson".It's been kept out
    of the light and in a drawer for who knows how many years.

    RE: .4 what is the address of The Shop in W. Concord.

    Thanks for all the info

    	The only Bob Johnson to play MLB before 1960 was an OF. He played
    with Philidelphia from 1933-1942, Wash in '43, and Bos in '44 and '45.

    If this is the right Johnson it must ahve been signed in '33 or '34
    since the Babe went to the NL and retired in '35. Maybe he wasn't
    playing for the Sox in that game, but against them for Philly.

    Bob.....

    Mets yearbook go for these days...It is in excellent condition...

      I would think that a Mets fan would think it quite valuable.
    I'm not so don't look at me. I would suggest picking up a copy of some
    puplication like the Sport Collectors Digest and seeing if you could
    find some pointers or someone looking for this sort of thing. If it
    is sport related and has good connections to a good year or player,
    somebody is going to want to collect it and if they want it bad enough,
    they will pay accordingly. Good hunting!
