| I have two bats, both autographed by Mickey Mantle. To answer your
question, the best guide is to go to some shows, cards that is, and
sometimes, you will luck out and there will be a bat dealer selling
some bats. The show in Westboro, Ma. on Sundays, the bat dealer is
usually there, but no guarantees. You can either take them with you so
he can appraise them for you, or describe what you have, he should be
able to give you a pretty good idea. Keep them in bat tubes, or before
long, you end up with just the bat, and the autogragh wears off in your
hands if people are holding them. Bat prices have really taken off
over the past year. They are getting very popular. There really isn't
too much out there presently on bats in the way of price guides.
Its more of a personnel thing, and its what the buyer will pay usually.

| What is the "ballpark" (pardon the pun) figure on the going price of
bats?
I have a 1967 Red Sox bat signed by all the players. About 10 years ago
when I sold my baseball card collection, the guy offered me $250. for
it but I decided to keep it, so right now I have no idea what it is worth,
if we are talking the $200 range $1000 range or what. (1967 was a pennant
year). The prior note mentioned going to shows, etc. which sounds like
a good idea, but was wondering if anyone could throw out an aprox $ figure.
I also have 2 baseballs one signed by the team and the other by only
Tony C and Yaz which I would be curious as to aprox what they are worth.
I saw a TV show on the other day and I guess some of the collectables
are bringing "big big bucks". (they said sports collectables were the
best investment of the 1990's?)

| There is a new store in Northboro Mass. that deals in autographs.
I don't know if they can help you or not but they are in the business
and perhaps for a small fee could help you determine price and even
authenticate it for you.(helps to sell such things.) They had a
baseball signed by Babe for $6k and one signed by Mantle and mays
for $2.5k.
The store is on main street going away from Marlboro about 1/2 mile
after you go through the center of town. It is In a small (RED) shop
on the left side of the road. They have funny hours, so best to go
around noontime. If it's worth enough, they may even buy it from you.
They have some nice stuff for all sports.

| The guy gets what he can I'm sure. Those were his prices. $6000 for
Ruth and $2500 for Mantle/Mays. Btw the Mantle/Mays was on lay away
as in sold as soon as the poor guy comes back with the rest of the
cash.That is why I thought it might be agood place to establish a good
price. Btw he has others ( balls) if you are interested.

| Last I heard Mantle and Mays were still alive, still signing balls. How
can anyone legitimately think a ball, unless it was a special all-star
game ball or WS ball from a long time ago (Proof? they're just special
stamps) be worth 2.5K? I saw Willie on the Home shopping network. They
had balls signed by all living 500 HR club members for less than $500.
Some prices are just plain wrong.

| HSN, that cable program selling the baseball autographs, had a program
on Tuesday nite, selling Willie Mays, BB for $39 plus P&H and they said
it retails for $75. and a bat, specially made up for the show for $179
and retailed for $375 plus the P&H. Ridiculous prices. Then, which I
found very interesting, Barry the Expert, says that Williams, Mantle,
Joe D. and a number of other ballplayers will no longer sign bats. So
the HSN announcer asked why?? Good Question says Barry. He says,
that Bats take 3 times as long to sign, they are very hard to handle,
and, they are very very difficult to sign straight across the bat,
inorder to get a "good appearing auto" on the bat, so they don't like
doing it, and they don't sign them anymore in public. But the
promotters of the shows still are able to get a few signed for a
premium price. I guess clothing is another no-no on there list, which
is time consuming, and difficult to get a good auto on a piece of wool,
hat or uniform.
I have been in that store in Northboro, and the prices are steeeep,
they said everything has been authenticated, from California. Ha,Ha
imported from Taiwan, I wonder if they have looked into starting to
copy autographs, like they've done to computers??
