    While I was at the Jersey Shore this weekend I read an article in
    the New York Post about the new brand of baseball cards that will
    be on the market next year.  The entire article is too long to rehash
    here but I will give you the basics.
    
    
    	1) They are called Upper Deck
    
    	2) Supposed to be HIGH quality cards (read expensive)
    
    	3) 89 cents for a wax pack
    
    	4) They will be available in January
    
    	5) They jave taken 14,000 orders in there first week.
    
    	6) Early reveiews "slick clean product with sharp full-color
    photos on both front and back."  Linited statistical information
    on back similar to Donruss. 

    	7) Factory set available next June at $29.95.
    
    	8) Production for 1989 700 million.  That is 700 cards at one
    million per.  The same amount of Don Mattinglys will be produced
    as Joel Skinner's.
    
    	Five key strategy points:
    
    
    		1) Costly three dimensional holograms that will be affixed
    to 100 "rookie cards" to guard against counterfeiting.
    
    		2) Tamper proof packaging to frustrate cherry picking.
     "It is a tight seal to protect against damage and once you've torn
    it open I defy you to put it back together again.
    
    		3) A high grade low fiber content stock which is "probably
    the best paper on the market today.
    
    		4) Superior photos
    
    		5) A distribution system designed to guard against dealer
    hoarding.

	I read about these too in SCD. They promise that each case coming out of the factory will be different in order packed to prevent people from 'decoding' them. Also, you cant see through the tight colored Cello-packs and look for certain cards. This set will probably enjoy the popularity that the 'Sportficks' set has endured, but you never can tell. -John

	Hhhhmmm.....I did a title search and this didn't come up. OH,well. Back to my question- It now appears that UD has signed a contract with Nestle to co-produce the cards next year. It'l be interesting to see how bad a corporation can screw up a great product. Anybody have the address for UpperDeck? My set was shorted card #399! I want to have a word with them. Al

	I went to the show in Sturbridge yesterday and a guy was selling 1-800 for $85 and a few others were selling them for $90. More than one dealer told me that they would be down to $75 soon. I traded a factory sealed 1-800 upperdeck set for a factory '87 Fleer Glossy, updates included (Tin boxes). Does antone have any comments on how I made out on that swap? Rick

	Woolworths in NYC (34th Street) has dropped the price of '89 factory 1-800 sets from $98.00 to $79.00. There still wasn't a line of people waiting to make this great investment.

	While sifting through my cards last night, and melding the ones from my want-list into the holes in my set, I noticed a strange thing. Three cards had different photos on the back. Same photos on the front, but different on the back. No major stars, but they weren't listed in Beckett's (no surprise there) as "A"/"B" variations, so I was wondering if anyone in here has any information on them (or any other '89 UD baseball variations): #321 (Gary Varsho) #627 (Bill Scrhoeder) #628 (Fred Manrique) ??? -rjk
