Hi,
I need some help regarding the hand-held video games. My 7 year old
son has requested such for Christmas. I have no idea what I'd look for
in one of these games. I searched Consumer Reports for a clue, but
they've not done an article on these.
I know I may be in the wrong note, but I'm looking for pointers to
where folks may have discussed the relative merits and/or drawbacks of
various makes. I've heard the name "gameboy" and another called
"sega".
Any information or pointers to same would be appreciated. You may post
here for the benefit of others, or send mail directly.

If I were you I'd go to your local electronics store, and try a few. My
choice was based on the price of games (of which you buy many) rather
than the price of the console (of which you buy one), I'm not a purist.
The variety of games available is also worth noting. I wasn't bothered
about colour/mono chrome but I think colour screens seem to be more easy
to work out what's being represented.
Unless its meant to be a surprise, it might be a good idea if you found
out what your sons peers have, as sharing games is alot cheaper than
buying, and there might be a certain amount of 'street-cred' (or
whatever the modern term is!) about owning one make over another.
My Gameboy is bottom of the market in quality/price compared with other
systems, but met my criteria. Its also been around for a while, so
there's a large software base and the older game cartridges can be
picked up at reduced price.

To me it's also a question of power.
That is, my gameboy is not as battery-consuming as many multi-colour
better performance consoles.
It's also small enough to slip into my pocket.
So the gameboy is good for travels but at home with an adapter
maybe another console (or computer?) is better.
Just my opinion...
