| | Here's some tidbits on how to get through level 1:

There are a couple of important things to remember about the game.
In order to jump farther, press the A and B buttons. Also, you can
jump on some of the doors and window ledges. The trick is to pick the
    right ones.

First, you start off at the purple trashcan and the leaping alien.
Usually what I try and do is just leap over the alien (bounce off the
trash can) and continue on. The very first person you come to is
usually an alien, use the X-ray specs to see. What I've found is that
if you go ahead and get the clown at the beginning, the rest of level 1
is very stingy about giving you aliens to pounce on. Next, I go under
the 3 bouncing aliens and jump up on the window ledge immediately
after. From the ledge, jump straight up to the top of the window.
Then use the A+B jump to grab the spray can to the left. As you grab
the spray can, it's important to move Bart right as fast as you can,
otherwise, momentum will carry him into the aliens. When you get the
spray can, go right past the window a little bit and the guy coming
toward you will probably be another alien. When you get the alien, go
left, positioning yourself as close to the leaping aliens as possible.
Behind them is the purple monster poster. Jump straight up in the air
and just shoot the spraypaint over the heads of the aliens at the
purple monster. One good squirt should change his color. Proceeding
back left, go under the aliens and spraypaint the first trashcan.
Avoiding the leaping alien, go left to the start of the level. Get a
running start, use the A+B jump, jump on top of the trashcan, which
will serve as a springboard and will carry you right to the clown.
It's tough to do, but a little practice will make it easy. Continue
right. You'll probably find one more alien.

Past the bar is a pay phone with some aliens sliming back and forth.
Jump onto the seat in front of the pay phone, jump onto the clothesline
and walk across. The white sheets will fall on the purple objects
covering them. Go left, across the clothesline again and get off, down
to the pay phone seat and off again. To the far right, you'll see a
bush behind the far right alien. That bush contains a clown one-up.
There are two ways to get it. The first involves just leaping past the
aliens, into the bush, knocking the one-up out and chasing after it
until you get it. The second might be more fun for your son. Stand on
the pay phone seat again, use the selector to select coins instead of
X-ray specs. Push the A (or is it B) button to "use" the coin in the
payphone. The phone will ring in the bar next door, the owner (I think
his name is Moe) will answer. Bart will ask for one of his stupid
names just like he does on TV, Joe will repeat it to the bar patrons
and they'll all laugh. You can do this about four times by the way
with different results. After that it repeats. But don't use all your
coins, you'll need them. Anyway, when you get off the phone seat, if I
remember correctly, a guy will be walking toward you with a purple
shirt. Spray him fast, but get the h**l out of the way or he'll walk
into you. The important point is when you head right again, the aliens
will be gone and you can simple walk in front of the bush, jump up and
pop the one-up out and get it.

Proceed right, to the 3 leaping aliens. The first two have bushes to
the left of them. Stand in front of both of those bushes and jump
straight up. You'll get a coin from each. After you get past the
aliens, I think the second bush on the right has another coin.

Okay, that should be enough to get you going. From here on, I'll
just give you the highlights. When you get to Tool World, position
yourself in front of the door and push up. You'll be inside. Buy a
wrench. Ignore the key, it lets you warp, but only on level 1. Don't
waste the coin. Push down to exit. Go to the right and stand close to
the fire hydrant. Spray paint the hydrant, then select the wrench you
just bought. If you're close enough to the hydrant, it will open the
hydrant and water will flush the paint off the awning.

At the Novelty Shop, go inside and buy one cherry bomb and at least 5
rockets (As a beginner, you should probably buy more rockets until you
get used to how they work).

Go into the toy store and buy a magnet. Ignore the whistle, it just
summons a dog who bothers you. The magnet won't be used until level 3,
but if you've got an extra coin, it's worth it.

When you come to the awning with the paint can over it, there are two
ways to clear both purple objects: 1. Go to the right, leap on the
trashcan and then onto the window ledge above. Go left and simply walk
into the paint can. It will spill over and repaint the awning. 2.
There's a ball in front of the window. Walk into the ball and it will
start rolling. Keep following it and when it gets underneath the paint
can, leap on it (careful timing, here). Wherever you leap on the ball,
it will travel straight up. If your aim is true, it will hit the paint
can and accomplish the same purpose. You have to go up on the ledge
anyway to get the flower pot on the left, but I still like to see if I
can hit the ball at the right time.

At the pet shop, hop onto the ledge of the window with the bird in
it. It doesn't matter where. Select the cherry bomb and press the
button to use it. You'll toss it, it'll explode and scare the bird
away. The reason I say get on the ledge is that usually, a dog comes
out after you've scared the bird and he can be troublesome. Wait until
    he leaves before proceeding.

When you reach the park, there's a coin in the bush before the
Keep-Off sign. At the sign, jump up and you'll land on the grass.
Keep walking and (this is my favorite part), a cop comes walking toward
you with a purple suit on. Spray paint the suit, then get out of the
way or, again, he'll walk into you. I usually go left and then jump up
to avoid his head as he crosses the street.

Go right and you'll see the bird on the statue. Just as the bird
appears to the right of the screen, select rocket and use the A button
to use the rocket. The rocket will be on the ground and Bart will have
a sparkler in his hand to light the rocket. To light it, simple walk
into the rocket. The rocket will fire and the trajectory should carry
it into the bird, who flies away. Here's where you might have to
practice a couple of times to get it right. Just remember, it's like
shooting pigeons, you'll have to lead the target a little bit and take
    into account your firing distance.

I'm sure you've gotten past the skateboard part. Just after the last
red alien before the mean boy on the skateboard appears, there's a row
of bushes. One of those bushes (I think fourth from the left) has a
one-up in it. Jump and grab it.

When you get to the bowling alley, fire a rocket at the purple sign.
The sign will light up and no longer be purple. At the retirement
home, same thing, remembering to lead just a bit, shoot a rocket at the
purple windows to get rid of them. I've found that if you fire the
rocket just as the window appears on the right of the screen, you'll
stand a better chance of hitting it.

By this time, you should have all of your goals reached. If you
have, the barricade that you found won't be there and you'll continue
to fight the level 1 boss. If not, you've missed something. If you
purchased the key, I think you can use it to warp from the front door
of the retirement home back to Moe's bar and vice-versa.

If you 've attained your goals, you'll be facing the bully. Bart's
hand will no longer have a spray can in it, but he'll be able to fire
rocks at the bully using the same button. When I get here, I usually
ignore Maggie's bowling balls and just start firing rocks. After about
4 hits, the bully disappears and you're on your way to level 2. If you
want to use the bowling balls, leap up just as it gets to you and hit
it with your head. This will send it into the bully, if he doesn't
    leap over it.
